I'm going to write a post that ignores what went on over the weekend---ignores the 45 million dollar military/president's birthday parade, ignores the thousands of 'No Kings' protests, ignores the inhumane tactics used by ICE, ignores that the president is illegally sending federal troops in where governors don't want or need them, ignores the so-called "Big Beautiful [ugly] Bill" working its way though the Senate and will end up bankrupting us if it passes, ignores the political assassinations in Minnesota. I'm even going to ignore how smart and courageous the new pope was with his live stream message on parade day that surely irked 45/47. Instead of writing about any of those topics I'm going to be Miss Merry Sunshine and share details about all the fun stuff, frivolous stuff and mundane stuff going on in my little corner of the world. In other words, while our seat of government metaphorically burns I'm taking a mental health day.
Let's start with the customized paint-by-number I recently finished to the left. This one is of my oldest niece's oldest grandson and by the time this post goes live another customized paint-by-number kit should arrive from Amazon of my youngest niece's youngest granddaughter. I had hoped to eventually do all of my great-great nieces and nephews but my arthritic hands aren't going to last that long. So I cut the list down by eliminate my nephew's seven grandchildren and will just concentrate of those of my niece's which puts me at four done and three to go before hanging up my paint-by-number brushes. I still hold out hope that I'll be able to find a painting style that works in my old age---one where fine details are not required. If I ever get the time! They keep us so busy here on my continuum care campus that blocking out a chunk of time to experiment is hard to do. On the day this post goes live, for example, this is my schedule: Chinese restaurant lunch off campus with fellow residents from 11:30 to 1:30, Teaching Kitchen back here from 2:30 to 3:00, Mahjong from 3:00 to 4:30, a Magic Show from 4:30 to 5:30 and from 5:30 to 7:00 is a cookout in our park featuring their mouth watering ribs. In the morning and after 7:00 PM I'll catch up on publishing any comments that come in on this post. No one is forcing us to sign up for everything offered and believe it or not, I could have taken a couple exercises classes before the bus picked us up for lunch.
Also in the somewhat fun department is I'm getting a new computer. My current one won't expand enough to get Windows 11 and Windows 10 won't be supported after October 14th. The IT guy here on campus is also a shirt-tail relative on my husband's side who has taken to calling me Auntie Jean and he helped me pick out a reliable HP machine. (We're both worried about tariffs and a higher than normal demand causing shortages if I wait until fall to make the change.) When the new computer gets here he'll help me move my files and photos over to it, hook up Wi-Fi and my printer. I've also made the decision that it's time to join the mouseless community. So I've been practicing using the touchpad. I find it frustrating but already I can tell that it's a good decision for my arthritic wrist.
Speaking of my wrist, I saw my orthopedic doctor this week for a follow up on the Synvisc gel he put in my wrist and to get the results on my yearly bone density test. The day after I got the shot the top of my hand swelled up and I thought it wasn't going to work but he said that it takes time for it to seep in where it needed to go which turned out to be true. Anyway, as I told him it helped 80%. I can once again pick up things without dropping them, put my earrings in and all motions from the wrist to my finger tips is usually pain-free.
I still have a great deal of pain in my forearm. For that the doctor did some more tests and I got a final and firm diagnosis on what is causing it. My theory from day one has been proven right, that the forearm pain is not coming from the crushed vertebrae in my neck or my arthritic wrist. It is 100% caused by the surgical mess in my elbow from a long-ago break---something he wasn't willing to assume on face value until he'd ruled out everything else. The only real cure is another elbow replacement surgery but at my age I don't think that's a wise choice, so he's recommending a daily steroid pill for life for the pain and inflammation and for me to quit doing anything that causes the sharp pains. That means---among other things---I need to rethink the bras in my life. Eventually he may have to remove the screw that he can feel poking out the surgical site but we'll cross that bridge if it looks like it will actually break through the skin.
And last but not least I'm four days into using the Pink Salt Trick. If you don't know what that is, I'll explain in my next post when I have more data to know if it helps or not. It sounds crazy, but I've done crazier things. Spoiler alert! One thing I've have learned: there are two Pink Salt Tricks going around the internet and a Pink Salt Hack. One is practically free and the other two are not. I'm doing the free version. ©
Until Next Wednesday...
I agree with not delving into all the world wide current issues. We can watch the news for that! That "paint by number" does not look like a paint by number! I look forward to the trials and tribulations of learning a new operating system!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for continuing to blog. Maybe you can try "talking" your blog and letting AI type it up for you. Then a tiny bit of editing.
Paint-by-number portrait are really strange. From a distance they look like photographs but up close they look like broken up color blocks of colors that shouldn't be on anyone's face. And I cannot tell what a face is going to look like until all the colors are there.
DeleteI haven't tried talk typing but I do it all the time with texting so if the time comes where by wrists just can't take typing anymore I will convert. The only down to that is you can't listen to anything while you do it or the AI will type words coming from the TV or Kindle.
You are busy! I'm glad you're having some fun. A new computer. You're a brave woman and I wish you only good things when it comes to adapting to it. I got a new phone months ago and am still muttering about how different it is from my previous one. I don't know anything about the Pink Salt Trick. I refuse to research it so you'll have to explain it. Can't wait.
ReplyDeleteMy old HP is a generation 3 and my new one is an HP generation 11. So there will be a learning curve, I'm sure. My IT guy is hooking it up this Friday. Crossing my fingers that all goes well. Last year when we had to connect my new printer we had a ton of issues.
DeleteResearching the Pink Salt Trick is a rabbit hole to to down. I had to finally tell myself, "enough is enough!"
First of all, your paintings are wonderful and I'm hoping you will not only finish the remaining niece but maybe even start on the nephew's gang! though there ARE a lot of them! And good news on your hand, too. I'm glad the shot is helping. I guess it makes sense, not replacing the elbow but that's a toughie. Your new computer will be wonderful. I still mouse but my wireless mouse is wonderful. I hated the cord. (I still use an external wireless keyboard, too!) Now I'm off to look up pink salt.
ReplyDeleteI have been wondering if I could do a group of kids ---that way I'd have only two paintings to do my nephew's tribe. I'll have to stalk their Facebook pages to see if I can find something that would work.
DeleteElbow replacement surgery is long with a long recovery time of therapies. Add the fact that I'm overweight which doesn't make me a good candidate to be under for several hours. I've been living with intense jabs of pain for maybe five years now. Once I start on the daily steroid I'm hopeful.
LMAOROTF at how Clever you "Ignored" it all but still got it into a Positive Post my Friend, very Clever indeed!!! *Winks* Christ on a Bike can any of us REALLY ignore the continuous Fuckery and decline... I do think he's gonna start a War with Iran... we ought to be looking for the Mark of the Beast on that man!!!
ReplyDeleteIt just gets worse with him, doesn't it. At our farm table dinner on Monday I sat next to a woman who watched the parade and thought it was "special." She didn't even know what "No Kings" meant or that there had been protests all over the country! These MAGA people are insulated from reality. And every day the rest of us just crumble a little more under the weight of 45/47's actions. RFK jr just fired all the 17 scientists on the vaccines committee!
DeleteOkay, I'm back already, my Attention Span is shot to Hell lately, and I think I need a Mental Health Break too Jean. *LOL* My bum Foot turned out to simply be overuse, according to my Doc, I've ramped up Walking and that did it. *Whew* I got Tired just reading your busy itinerary but it all sounds like such Fun and a Welcome distraction from World Woes. How do you order/where to get a Custom Paint By Number? That might be Fun to get some fav pixs of the Grands or Great Grands and present them as Gifts, unpainted of coarse, Lord Jesus, I don't have the ambition you do to actually Paint them myself, my Friend. *Winks*
ReplyDeleteI get them from Amazon and I've ordered from all three of their vendors who sell custom paint-by-numbers. I suspect that they are all made in the same Chinese factory and I've had no trouble with them. Shipping takes longer, One tip I'd give is not to buy them unless you're going to start painting them soon after they arrive. The paints do dry up after 4-5 months, especially if you don't close the caps so tight you hear a snapping sound. They are relaxing to paint.
DeleteYour custom paint-by-number painting looks great, Jean! I hope you get some relief from your arm pain. Of course, you know I had to look up the pink salt hack - hmmm, interesting! I look forward to reading about your experience with it. Wasn't there something similar going around the internet a few years back, but the drink had maple syrup and cayenne in it and I think it was some sort of cleanse? Beyonce was doing it, as I recall.
ReplyDeleteYes, Beyonce and a lot of other Hollywood people went down that rabbit hole. Maple syrup and honey seem to are interchangeable. I've seen cayenne in some of the night cleanser. Pink salt seems to be the only ingredient that is a given in all the combinations of spices, oils and household stuff I've seen online. My first week I lost 4.6 pounds without changing anything else in my food intake or exercise.
DeleteThat's pretty incredible weight loss for 1 week!
DeleteNormally I'd think so too, but based on the the testimonies online I was disappointed it was a pound a day.
DeleteYou certainly are busy but it sounds like a fun busy so good for you. The paint by number painting looks terrific! Good luck with the new computer - at least you have your IT guy to help you adapt so that's helpful. Keep enjoying life - it's a great way to "resist"!
ReplyDeleteThe IT guy costs a pretty penny but I'm glad we have access to one. He's coming Friday so I have a few days to use the computer without the learning curve of a new one frustrating me.
DeleteI want to take a vacation from the world news, too. We might not be able to bury our heads in the sand for long, but a respite is a very good thing! I can't get over how great the paint-by-number turned out. Such great detail. I hope you can continue without too much discomfort. Glad to hear your hand is doing better post shot. If you discover any comfortable bras that are easy to put on, let us know. Have a good week, Jean!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try the front closing bras. Trying to unhook the back ones is like breaking my arm, the pain is so intense. I am now pulling the straps down first, then twisting the bra so the the clasp is in the front but that even causes some minor pain.
DeleteSo wonderful that all those activities are available to you and you neighbors. I think it would be hard for me to pick and choose, they all sound wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI love those paint by numbers. I wonder if it is something I could do? I might look into this. I was a hand piecer and quilter. Switching to a machine has not made the process easier and I have closets of fabric and unfinished projects.
Now I need to look up Pink Salt. I am out of the loop!!!
The reason I will have to give up painting is that my fingers lock up when I have my hand around a brush too long and I have to pry them apart. If I was disciplined to paint for under an hour at a time, I could avoid that but once you start you don't want to stop, it's so relaxing.
DeleteI'm bummed that you don't find switching to a machine to quilt any easier. I too have loved hand piecing and quilting and have boxes of quarters in my closet. This next winter I have planned t switch over to quilting by machine. My fingers lock up hand sewing too. And with knitting. And I've had surgery in both thumbs for that but it didn't last long enough to go through it again.
I'm so glad you have so many fun things to do! š
ReplyDeleteI cam home from the cookout and fell asleep for two hours. Fun, full day.
DeleteI continue to be an Armchair Activist--writing my congressmen, making phone calls, signing petitions, etc. I devote an hour a day to it and then I stop. I'll kick things up into high gear when it gets near to midterms.
ReplyDeleteYour painting project looks great. I hope your pain resolves soon so that you can do more things without hurting.
Thank you for your activism. I don't do nearly as many phone calls as I should. I donate money and sign petitions, etc. but I could do more.
DeleteGood on you to ignore all the horrible happenings in America at this time, also good on you for completing the customised paint by numbers, it looks great. I didn't know you could get such a thing.
ReplyDeleteI use both the mouse and touch pad on my laptop sometimes the touch pad is easier for me but it took some getting use to.
I now wear front fastening bras which I bought from Temu
I've never shopped Temu but I've seen their ads on Facebook. I need to check them out.
DeleteI think I will end up with using both a mouse and the touchpad.
Jean :
ReplyDeleteyour custom paint looks great, thanks to you I havebeen also doing paint by numbers painting & having so much fun with it & also thanks to AI working on my passion project of programming & having so much fun. My brother gifted me custom paint by numbers family picture which I did finish but then had gone on vacation for few months & by the time I came back all paints were dried up, but picture is not so bad but could have been better, but oh well
Asha
I discovered a few paint pots had dried out on my kits too and I discovered that while I thought they were closed, they really weren't tight. So now I turn them over and push down with the heel of my hand until I hear a clicking sound. I recently read there you can add "flow media" to the paint-by-number pots to keep them from drying as quickly as tiny pots of paint tends to do. I haven't tried it yet but I have some around from other projects. I'll let you know.
DeleteYour paint from numbers are terrific. I can't believe you're able to do that fine detail work. I'm no good at painting or at least haven't tried long enough to pick up any skill. The outings sound fun. I'm almost through unpacking so hope to join a few over here in the near future.
ReplyDeleteYou've moved! That's exciting. I can't believe I can do that kind of detail anymore either.
DeleteBum wrist or not your paintings Jean are so beautifully done!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteEasy solution putting on a bra - have the hooks/back at the front of your waist, hook the bra and then just turn it around with the cups in front and pull up in place.
ReplyDeleteI do it that was now and it causes pain, but not as much as reaching behind me does. Thanks though! It might work for someone else reading this thread.
DeleteBe careful about TEMU. I have some friends who gave in and ordered, and the quality of the goods they received was consistently poor. Cheap Chinese stuff apparently isn't so different from cheap American stuff.
ReplyDeleteIt was interesting to read about your fingers locking up after holding a brush for a while. Mine don't lock up, thankfully, but the first joint on the forefinger of my right hand is canted almost 45 degrees to the left, from years of holding a brush. I remember an old French phrase that seems to apply; they'd say of an apprentice who finally began to show physical effect, "The trade has entered his body."
You always have such interesting trivia to share!
