Lady Brunches and Jumanji: The Next Level

My social life---such as it is---occurs every two weeks when my Gathering Girls pals meet for brunch. This week we had a good time laughing and catching up on each other’s lives and talking about the Golden Globes and fashions. I wonder how much money those movie stars spend on tape to keep their bosoms from falling out of their dresses. Cleavage at the Golden Globes was so unnatural you couldn't help wondering what the heck they were thinking. And the makeup. I guess I'm not someone who should be judging in that department, given I only wear Burt’s Bees Lip gloss. I did buy a lipstick at a Mary Kay party one of my gal pals hosted last fall but it’s too expensive to wear/waste on an ordinary outing. And that, dear friends, is why I have a drawer full of rancid, outdated makeup that will be purged out of my life on one of these long, winter days. I’m getting old. I should look an everyday outings as events worthy of the wearing the good lipstick, the Joy perfume, the like-new underwear that I save for doctor appointments. My friends do. Well, I don’t actually know about their underwear but they always smell good and look polished from head to toes.

And several of my gal pals enjoy shopping for new clothes, something I hate doing. One I call the Queen of QVC and another is such a classy dresser I love sitting next to her hoping her fashion sense will “jump ship” and come live with me for a while. They still all enjoy putting on jewelry. I still enjoy seeing mine all lined up in its box. Sometimes I’ll actually take something out to try it with an outfit but it ends up right back where it came from because I can’t bring myself to wear jewelry with my orthopedic tennis shoes. My whole wardrobe revolves around those shoes because I can’t walk without them. A year or two ago I actually did buy a pair of Mary Janes with orthopedic guts, made in Israel and costing as much a car payment but like the Mary Kay lipstick in the drawer, they sit in my closet waiting for a special event.

At one point during our long brunch we turned our conversation to Trump’s latest headline grabber…the killing of Sokiemani. Our resident Trump supporter wasn’t present so we could compare our thoughts openly and I admit I got a bit fiery. We all fear we’re seeing the beginning of another, long war and we questioned whether he did it to take the attention off his upcoming senate impeachment trial. He lies so much how could anyone trust what he says or does? Needless to say, none of us were happy about what happened over the weekend like one of my in-laws on Facebook was. She posted a meme saying, “This is what a REAL president looks like.” How could anyone support a president who whines/brags on TV that he’s not going to follow international laws against destroying ancient wonders and cultural places in Iran? Does he not understand that if we target their Hyrcanian Forests it's not only a war crime but they’ll come after our Redwoods? And if we destroy their revered places of ancient Persian culture it doesn't make us any safer, it just makes targets out of our revered museums. Trump is undermining and destroying our country from within with his thumbing his nose at domestic and international laws. I wish he would quit waving his penis around and start using his other head when making decisions that affect us all!

Rant off and back to our 1st Monday’s brunch. Afterward two of us went up to a little town north of the city to see the Movie, Jumanji: The Next Level. We saw the second one in this franchise and wanted to see this one even though I doubt we're in their target demographic, being that neither one of us would know one end of a gaming joy stick from the other. We had a great time but thought this one was a tad harder to follow than the other one. Or are we just getting older and slower? Either way, it helped that I’ve had a thing for Dwayne Johnson and Jack Black’s style of humor for a long time. And Nick Jonas is eye candy for all but the dead. He had me wishing I had a great-granddaughter I could hook him up with to keep the guy just one family gathering away at all times. Of course, he'd have to bring that black horse with him and wear that old pilot's jacket to make the eye-candy thing work for me.

IMDb says the following about this action-comedy: “the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to rescue one of their own, the players will have to brave parts unknown from arid deserts to snowy mountains, to escape the world's most dangerous game.” It was entertaining but dragged a bit at the beginning when they were setting the characters up but once they entered the game it was so fast moving and funny you didn't want to take your eyes off the screen. Danny Devito was added to the cast, playing a grouchy grandfather who in the beginning of the film often said, “Getting old sucks!” but after they’d all won playing Jumanji when he started to say, “Getting old---“ his grandson cut him off saying, “I know Grandpa, getting old sucks.” “No," came the reply, "I was going to say getting old is a gift. I forget that sometimes.” And that’s a good note to end this post on. ©

  1. Oh dear. You should come visit. I wear socks with orthopedic sandals. While my slacks are generally the good knits or jeans leggings I always wear bright sweaters. And have painted toes under the socks. And wear earrings and in my case Angel perfume. And nothing in my face but moisturizer and chapstick. Yes. I am thatbperson.....

    1. Those bright socks you buy are great. I do wear small earrings but I don't consider those to be jewelry for some reason. They just fill the holes in my head. LOL

  2. No point in saving the lipstick it will be rancid by the time you wish to use it. You are special enough that you don't need an occasion to look even better. Doesn't it just make you feel better with your hair done and makeup on? Oh wait that's me. I love the clothes, the jewelry and the makeup...I'm one of those.
Jean my problem would be my rationale for the lipstick. If it cost $50 and I used it for a year I'd figure that was about $.15 a day and I'd say that was worth it. Isn't it funny how we can rationalize? (or rather how I can)
As for the orange guy - being away made us away from the news. I am playing catch up. But I don't know that this is anything more than propaganda for his re-election as W lied about weapons of mass destruction where there were none, just so he and his cronies (cheney and Rumsfeld) could lead us into another war. I have some reading to do to catch up but something doesn't smell right to me.
I like The Rock, DeVito and Hart. But you lost me on the Jonas kid. I do not find him even remotely good looking so no chance I'd be hitting on your boyfriend Jean.

    1. Actually, no I don't feel better when I have make up on. I just feel phony. And I have short wash-and-wear hair that doesn't need to be done. I do like a good quality haircut...need that. I've never found a lipstick that stays on longer than an hour. Seems like such a waste. The Mary Kay lady said there is one that's long lasting but you have to put on three layers of stuff and costs $60 total.

There are clips of Trump predicting Obama would star a war to get re-elected back in his day. Evidently he said it more than once because the media has been showing them.

Jonas is a kid. He reminds me of being an innocent teenager because he's the kind of "older man" I would have been crushing on when I was fifteen. Like I said, now he'd have to come with the horse and jacket though. Ohmygod, that horse was beautiful!

I also saw that clip of Trump saying that Obama would start a war to get elected. Exactly what 45 is doing to take the heat off the impeachment. Sigh.

    1. The funny thing is I couldn't tell you want anyone of my gal pals wears on their feet when we go to brunch. In the winter I care about being warm more than anything else.

I have no doubt that Trump did what he did because of the impeachment coming up. But his fans will never see the clips of him predicting Obama would start a war to get reelected because FOX has his back.

  6. I do feel better after 5 minutes of makeup. People perceive me differently as well! And it definitely takes years off my age. Especially now with half white hair! I have towhead eyebrows and lashes. Without a touch of color, I look 115!

Only earrings for me. And scarves and/or hats.

But now I do burn the yummy candles and use scented soap and try not to just "save" for later!

  7. Jean:

I feel Trump is following movie script of wag the dog & starting actual war just to get reelected & gets attention of the people off his impeach trial, such a jerk guy, man its unbelievable what kind of president America as whole has elected :(

you know now I am beginning to believe what whole world used to say about US,Russia,England, they will take out leaders, generals in other countries & make that country completely unstable & it might take the country close to decade to become established power again.

case & point When British ruled India while leaving India they made enough divide in the country that India had to be divided into India & Pakistan(muslim country). Not only that great & visionary leaders of India somehow got killed in Russia & plane accident which changed the trajectory of nation, & India was ruled by one party for so long & they basically did nothing for masses.
It took almost 75 years now that India got leader who is doing something for India & common man's lives are improving. Now as an adult seeing what US is doing in other countries, you start to believe what has been said in your history book is not a fiction but there is truth to it. ok end of my rant.

    1. What an interesting perspective, Asha. I'm sure you know far more about India and that part of the world than the average America. The most I remember about their history is that the British colonization raped the country of their resources.

I have no doubt that Russia, the USA and England have taken out leaders of other countries. The only question that remains is did they do it for good or evil purposes. We like to tell ourselves that America supports the sides that want to bring democracy to their people. But few of us are as naive as we used to be so our doubts creep in.

I just hate that we are leaving the next generation a world that is worse off than the one we inherited. I didn't feel that way before Trump came into office and exposed the hate and ignorance that was apparently just under the surface.

  8. Cleavage, what Cleavage? Ha,ha,ha. As a man that loved Cleavage years ago, not as much anymore, I was laughing at some of the ladies especially Patricia Arquette, O di mom, I love boobs but that woman is to top heavy
as far as Trump, he said years ago before he ran for president, he said that Obama would kill someone just to win the election. Guess what? That's what he has done.World War 3 is near and the GOP's are still with him. They are crazier then he is I guess.
Jumanji:I love the last ones and I want to see this new movie. I love the characters.
Jean, enjoys your month and when I come home after my cruise, we'll go we " Jumanji " See ya my friend.

    1. Honesty, some of those women had their boobs so jacked up and the nipples so close to the edge of their dresses a deep breath would expose them if not for their tape. They looked cheap and trashy. Salma Hayek, Mariah Carey, Patricia Arquette and Kelly Washington were the worst but half the women there needed more fabric in the top of their dresses.

      Enjoy your cruise, Paul!

  9. I'm very worried about impending war prior to the election. They make it sound like "OK, all's well now!" but don't believe it for a minute. We all saw "Wag the Dog." We just never thought we might live it.

  10. I do love makeup but wonder how much of it I will wear now that I am retired. I love a lipstick that has a good "fade" - as it wears off, it still leaves a nice colour behind on the lips - those are my favourites.
I haven't seen Jumanji but the movie poster bothers me because all the male explorers are properly dressed but the female has to do her adventuring in a skimpy crop top and short shorts. Why? (Rhetorical questions. I know why.) Reminds me of what I hate about mainstream movies. We are so culturally conditioned to expect this out of Hollywood that I bet most people didn't even question it. I know I didn't the first time I saw the poster.

    1. The characters in the Jumanji game all have different superpowers that help them play the game (they are essentially game pieces) and the female's are all kick-ass physical fighting strengths plus running, jumping, etc. Nothing stereotyped about her except the shorts and crop top. She doesn't read as 'sexy' or sexualized on screen at all. I know what you're saying about Hollywood but this is not a hill I would fight on with this movie.

  11. Yes, the Golden Globes had some craaa-zee fashion choices. I think Patricia Arquette's stylist needs to be fired. And Kerry Washington is so beautiful...why? She could have taken a hint from Olivia Pope. She always looked so amazing on Scandal. Oh, well. I thought the older women looked much more appealing: Meryl Streep, Helen Mirren, Annette Bening. There is something to be said for aging well.

As for makeup, I wear less and less, but I do wear some. My face has NO color without it. But I do have wash and wear short hair - at least when my hair stylist is available. She's just finishing a maternity leave next month, and the woman I've had in between is super busy, so I'm ready to cut my own hair and would if I wasn't scheduled for Monday. Argh. Hair is the one thing that can drive me nuts quickly.

I'm convinced the Orange One is on drugs, whether to hype himself up, deal with ongoing dementia issues, or some other weird circumstance. He's just not normal in any real way, and I too fear he'll start WWIII to get re-elected. The real pity is that the GOP won't stand up to him. They're complicit and when Mike Lee is upset with a hearing, you know it's bad. It's beyond frightening at this point. Mitch McConnell needs to go.

    1. I don't know what kind of rolls Patricia Arquette plays but when I saw her at the Globes I thought she must do porno. No other explanation for that god awful dress. And all those "wing" sleeves! Terrible. You're right, the older gays were so much classier.

My hair stylish of 6 years is pregnant and doesn't know if she'll be working afterward. I had changing when you've got a good one.

Trump speaks like a robot with a program with a bug that's going to blow it up at some point. His obsession with bringing up Obama every five minutes is so petty and proves this is no more than a one upmanship in his tiny, vindictive mind. I saw Mike Lee. I was shocked. We have good reason to worry about the safety of the world.

  12. I didn't watch the Golden Globes but have heard about the excessive cleavage so it must have been pretty over-the-top (in many ways). I remember seeing Patricia Arquette in the TV show Medium, where she was often filmed talking in bed with her husband. Her boobs stood straight up unnaturally even then (2005) and it looked weird. to each, their own, I guess, but that's a vanity I don't think I'll ever understand.

I don't wear makeup much now that I'm retired. I'll put some on if we are going out to something special but I wonder how different I really look. I am thinking about getting my eyebrows done, though. They are almost completely gone and it looks odd to me.

    1. I have one brown eye brow and one white one so I do put eyebrow cream on---I forgot about that. I was going to have them professionally dyed once but the girl dripped dye in my eye and I thought I would go blind. Boy, did that hurt! Washed right out with no damage but I couldn't go through with it after that. Make sure to wear something over your eyes when you have yours done.

I don't think those boobs of Arquette's are a vanity thing. I think it's a lack of self-esteem that would make a woman go that big...or keep them that big if they are natural which I doubt.

  13. I didn't watch the Golden Globes but you are making me think I missed something. Actually, all the cleavage couldn't make me sit through Ricky Gervais's snarks.

I loved both Jumanji's, demographics be dammed. They are laugh-out loud funny. Yes, number 2 was a bit more far fetched, but neither score high on the reality meter, do they?

  14. I don't go to movies, didn't watch the Golden Globes, and don't wear makeup, but I loved your ending. It reminds me of Andy Rooney's, "I didn't get old on purpose, it just happened. If you're lucky, it could happen to you."

  15. I am guilty of saving things for a special occasion too. I have been making an effort to wear my "special" shirts and shorts. My goodness, its not like they are couture outfits. I think it might go back to our childhood where you have your Sunday clothes, your school clothes and your play clothes. I'm still doing that and there is no reason. I'm going to really watch myself and see if I can break that habit. As for jewelry, same thing here. I like to look and admire what I have but the best I can usually do is put on a very plain pair of loops.

    1. I know that's where mine 'saving' comes from...childhood and a life long habit of following that patch. Add to that the knowledge that I will never have the money to buy a lot of new clothes that I used to be able to do when something wore out.

  16. Late to this post but love it. "use his other head"! LOL LOL LOL

I wear black leggings and hoodies, tunics, or sweaters everywhere with a pair of cute black ankle high boots. I consider it my uniform for comfort. And like you, I hate clothes shopping. I keep things for a very long time. Jewelry is my mala bracelets, my wedding band and a $7.00 sterling silver/turquoise ring I bought in Nevada in 1973. I used to wear lots of different earrings, now just round silver posts, when I even think of it. I have boxes of earrings, bracelets, pins, necklaces....I've donated a bunch but hang on to this remaining stuff: who knows why? I do wear some light make up, but almost never lipstick. I feel fake and think I look ridiculous. I'm currently using nipple cream (yes! nursing mothers use it, I guess) to treat my winter chapped lips. It's the only thing that works!

My 10 y/o granddaughter plays Jonas Brothers songs on my Alexa. She and her BFF made up choreographed dance moves to "Sucker". So cure. And yes, that young man is a cutie and a bomber jacket is always a good look! I saw Little Women the other day. Have you seen it? Beautiful costuming, sets, cinematography, acting. I liked it.

  17. I used to have a couple of hundred pairs of earrings bought in the 70s, I put half in an auction last summer. I hold on to the rest because they don't take up my room and I like looking at them and remembering my carefree days of wearing them.

I've forgotten that I wanted to try the nipple cream for shapped lips. I hear it works wonders. I'm going to put it on my Amazon wish list so I don't forget again.

All my gal pals want to see Little Women but I have no desire to see it. I struggles so much to read the book back in the day that I have bad feelings about it.
