The Widow Does Netflix's

So far I’ve written about the things I love the best about living in an independent living apartment on a continuum care campus. One thing I don’t like is the television service. On paper it looks good ---60 free cable channels for one TV plus free internet and Wi-Fi sounded good after paying over $300 a month for a 60 channel package where I used to live. But 10 of the channels here are a sports package and there are probably another 6-8 others that I call Old People Channels which I don’t watch at all. I could care less about black and white movies or TV shows from my youth or game shows, but I’m in the minority on that opinion around here. I think. Oh, and I'd rather you gag me with a spoon than make me watch the imported shows from England. And did I mention the "cable" isn't a true cable and the service is effected by the weather?

Recently Seven Brides for Seven Brothers was on one of the old people channels and the lunch table talk the next day was about that movie. There’s a delightfully crusty women here in her late nineties who had never married and she just raved on and on about how much she loves that movie and how she watches every chance she gets. I like her because she has no filter when it comes to asking other people questions. For example when she found out that we have to write essay answers to questions in the ‘Stronger Memories class she tried to convince us all that “they” could take those answers to get inside our heads. They’re just questions to provoke memories like ‘what did you do for fun growing up?’ But she won’t take the class because she doesn’t want a psychiatrist analyzing her! Heck, I could analyze her based on just the premise that her all-time favorite movie being about seven brothers who essentially kidnapped a bunch of women to turn into wives. I might not be right in my analysis but I’d have fun doing it.

Never-a-Bride’s younger sister also lives here on a separate floor of the same building and both say they’d kill each other if they shared an apartment. She cracks me up. She asks me a lot of no filter questions. I give her a lot of sassy, no filter answers. She spent her career working in a lab that runs tests on blood for the medical community, the only woman in her field when she first started working. I would love to do a deep dive into her life story. But she plays the tit-for-tat game whenever anyone asks her a probing question and I’m not quite readying to bare my soul in this community yet. So I’ll gather her stories up like grains of rice leaking out of a tiny hole in a box of Uncle Ben’s.

Back to TV: Like I said we get free cable into our living rooms but if we want a TV in our den or bedroom it has to be a smart TV or an old set that you can hook up to the new version of the ancient antennas (rabbit ears) to pick up what local channels are available. I’ve got both, but apparently I can’t enjoy TV when I can’t have all three televisions set on the same channel so I can walk freely from room to room and not miss anything. I’ve never been a sit-and-watch kind of person but Netflix is turning me into one. So every night from 9 or 10:00 to 1:00 I’m binge watching and I can’t multi-task my time in the bedroom which is a problem I’m still working on solving. I downsized a standing TV tray out of my life that if I had it back I could put my laptop on it and multi-task while sitting on the side of the bed, but I doubt you can buy just one of those trays because they come in sets---at least they used to back in the '50s when they are popular. New mission: Find a way to do more multi-tasking with my Netflix beside fold laundry and clean the on-suite bathroom.

I started out binge-watching Longmere, a modern westerner that I loved, then I binged Outlander which I also loved. I hated to see them both end. If you don’t know that Outlander is based on a well-love series of time-travel romance books you’ve been living under a rock. I cut my romance reading teeth on time-travel romances so this was right up my alley. I tried to like House of Cards but I’m still too turned off by politics to continue. I also tried to like Grace and Frankie but like I told a fellow resident, all I could think about watching the first three episodes is how close I came to living the lives of those women---married to gay guys who didn’t come out of the closet until they were old enough to draw Social Security. I see the heart-break and deception while everyone else sees the humor. Schitt’s Creek is another one I tried to like, but didn't. I watched three episodes and see the show as version Green Acres. Rich people loss their money and have to adjust to living a different way---a popular series here on campus. The Maid was another one that didn’t hold my interest and I don’t know why but I'm thinking I just don't relate to the whole single parent thing. For awhile I watched The Ranch because I like Ashton Kutcher and Sam Elliott but that got boring after hearing the thousandth F word. I’m still getting used to Netflix’s having no restrictions on language or full nudity. I'm not offended by either one in the least but it's lazy writing when it's just there because they can.

Now, I’m binging and loving Heartland, Virgin River and I’m embarrassed to admit to liking Jane the Virgin. A lot. That show is so campy, stupid, silly, far-fetched and you never know what the writers are going to do next. (Mel Brooks on steroids.) I’ve watched a few movies on Netflix too, but nothing special enough or bad enough to mention. If you’ve got any suggestions for my next binge, leave me a comment. I’m going to need something new soon. ©

  1. If you ever get a chance to get Amazon Prime Video, watch the "Alpha House" series. They're politicians, but comedy in action. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EX-DFx9IWwI Another good one is Bosch (detective series). And, Wallender is supposed to be good. I haven't found it yet but read someone else's recommendation of it. And, Doc Martin is also a good one. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408381/

  2. I do have DirectV but with a dumb TV that is all I watch and mainly just network offerings, no streaming. No suggestions for you though was amused that you liked Jane the Virgin also. I think I only saw the last season when it was cancelled. Sorry to hear anything with Sam Elliot was boring. I agree that using the F bomb like it is noun, verb, adverb and adjective is lazy writing.

    1. I resisted looking at Jane the Virgin for a long time but when I did I got addicted. The Spanish with English transitions doesn't even bother me like I thought it would.

All the characters in the Ranch use the F word in just about every other sentence. It really got boring after awhile and Elliot's part of a father who is constantly putting his sons down got old real fast too.

  3. Isn't it amazing how watching tv has changed? Back in the 50s and 60s we lived in the country and had tv antennas that pulled in a few channels (if the weather was clear). Sometimes it would cut out and mom would send us kids outside to try to adjust the antenna. There were so few choices and we would watch nearly anything that came on. Those were different times, though. Now we do have choices and the pandemic has probably increased tv watching more than ever. What I cannot believe is the pricing on some plans. My inlaws are aging but still living independently. Recently, they complained to us that their Dish Satellite plan had risen by hundreds of dollars per month, but my father-in-law loves sports and in order to see his favorite teams, he had to upgrade. And I'm sure if the company raises the pricing, he'll opt for it. It's kind of a racket if you ask me. Jean, when you mentioned the folding table, I wondered if you might find something online. I just typed in "small folding table" and there were quite a few that showed up. Probably not exactly what you had, but maybe one of them would fill the bill.

    1. I haven't looked online for a small table yet, thanks for the reminder.

The TV packages are a racket. If they'd let you pick out the channels you want to make a package of 24 or 60 it would be more user friendly. What good are 60 channels if half of them are stuff you'd never watch? The CEO of this place picked out the package thus it's heavy into sports and old people stuff. No hunter hunters or Decorating shows or women's talk shows.

    2. Thanks for the online suggestion. I found a bedside table that is even better than the old TV trays. It adjusts in height and angle so I could even use it for art.

Those program packages are a racket! I'll bet a lot of people would support a company that would let us pick and choose our own combination of TV stations. I'd rather have 24 that I'd actually watch than 60 when half are just time wasters to flip through.

    3. Glad you found a bedside table!

  4. "After Life." You were born to watch "After Life," I think. And you have to stick through the first few episodes. Ricky Gervais/widower journalist for a small paper -- with an attitude. The third season is starting now. Watch from the beginning. I think you have to give Grace and Frankie more than three episodes -- those characters truly evolve. I liked "The Komisky Method" too. My fave is Acorn but doesn't sound like you like the Brit stuff! I'm planning to cut my cable cord and add Amazon, Hulu and Apple TV in its place. Also, if you have a library card, you have access to KANOPY, which is free. Do you have a Roku? About $30 from Amazon or elsewhere and it makes streaming super easy!

    1. I just saw a promo for 'After Life' recently. I'll add it to my list.

I give all new shows three episodes before I judge. You and my niece both like Grace and Frankie so maybe I'll give if a few more episodes but it truly didn't do anything for me so far.

I'm not in the least surprised that you love the British stuff but that's not me. They play a lot of British films here on movie night. I have to strain too hard to understand the accents and I find the cations too distracting which is why I'm surprised it doesn't bother me in Jane the Virgin.

I need to get a library card soon. It will help with book club so I'll research KANOPY at the same time. I don't know what Roku is but it sounds like I need it. I've seen some things I'd like to stream. Thanks!

    2. Go to season 2 of Frankie and Grace -- they invent a vibrator for women with arthritis! LOL Kominsky Method is good except the 3rd and last season--they just walked through it to get it over with I think. I just started After Life. And seriously, you don't want to watch Bridgerton??? It was all the rage last year and everyone loved it (get ready for a "hot" episode or two.) You know I'm an Outlander fanatic!!! I just finished he 9th book and season 6 premiers on Starz in March. Yay!

    3. P.S. We ditched cable a while ago, when to DISH, now we do a streaming thing where we pick and choose which stations to subscribe to. At the end of the day, it might not be way cheaper cuz we watch a lot of channels, but it is nowhere near the $300 you say you were paying previously!

      Delete
    4. Donna, I didn't really know about Bridgerton until you mentioned it and I just googled it. I'll add it to my play list. I used to like Regency Romances back decades ago. I need to learn more about streaming and how to find good shows. It seems so complicated! Jeez, I remember back when all we had were three channels and they were black and white.

  5. Try "Kim's Convenience" on Netflix. It's sweet and funny. I can also enthusiastically recommend "AFter Life" and "The Kominsky Method." Also terrific are "Queen's Gambit" and "Bridgerton."

I really loved the first two seasons of "Grace and Frankie", but I found myself completely checked out in season 3. I never finished it.

There are also a lot of really great documentaries on Netflix. We use a Roku as well, and it's easy and allows lots of access to free channels, too. Enjoy your adventures in television!

  6. I second Jeanie's motion about giving "Grace & Frankie" another try. I binge watched several seasons when I had a free trial of Netflix. (Hey, I'm cheap.) I cut the cable cord several years ago and went with Sling TV and then went to Hulu. Last year I went back to Sling because Hulu had raised their prices too high. They justified that by all the "new content" but like you I don't watch 90 sports channels or all the new crap they were offering.

My favorite shows right now are "Escape to the Chateau" featuring a British couple who bought a run down chateau in France, and "Escape to the Chateau DIY" about other Brit couples who've done the same and the first couple, the Strawbridges, give them advice on renovating, etc. That show is free on the Peacock channel. My newest fave is "The Repair Shop" on Discovery+ which is a show about a group of British craftspeople who restore family heirlooms. It's so gentle and soothing that I watch it before I go to bed. I do put the closed captions on in case I miss something. That and turn my hearing aids up. :)

    1. How did British films and productions get so popular? There are some ladies here who watch British TV exclusively. I guess I need to give it a try. The restoration of heirlooms sounds like a show I'd like.

I need to branch out and try Discovery and Peacock. I haven't even pressed those buttons yet on my remote.

  7. On Netflix, I enjoyed Repair Shop and the Great British Baking Show and I second Nance's recommendation of the Queen's Gambit. I also really enjoyed The Crown. Some of those are British shows, tho, so maybe you won't like them. I really enjoyed them tho.
On my regular cable, I am enjoying "Ghosts" - a funny new series Thursday nights on CBS and I have watched RuPaul's Drag Race for years (VH1 Friday nights)!

    1. Lots of people here like The Crown, too. I think the reason I'm not good with British shows is you have to pay closer attention to facial expressions than with American productions and I'm usually multi-tasking. Ghosts sounds more up my alley. I'll try to catch it. I just put the Queen's Gambit on My List.

  8. We put the captions on for British (and French, Australian, New Zealand) show and, hey, some American shows because everyone mumbles these days. :-) So you can't multitask, but it's worth it, imho.

    1. I'm a slow reader and miss all the action if I concentrate on the captions, and if I concentrate on the action then I miss the captions. Believe me I've tried the British and Austrian shows. I do better with the Spanish to English captions for some stupid reason, though.

  9. I, too, disliked Schitt's Creek after the first few episodes, but was encouraged to hang in there. There's no hostility of anger or meanness in this show. The characters quirkiness grows on you and you cheer them on. Suggest you give it another try.

    1. Okay, I'm upping my three episodes cut off point to five since people are telling me three is not enough to various shows mentioned in this thread. What you are saying about Schitt's Creek not having any hostility or anger in it fits with my original take on the show that it's another Green Acres or Guillen's Island...character driven and the rich dealing with losing their money.

    2. FWIW,I hated Schitt's Creek the first time I tried to watch it (probably one episode). My daughter suggested I try again and it became a favorite of mine. But it definitely took a few episodes.

  10. Your commenters have covered most of the suggestions I would make, and until the end of your post, I was going to suggest Virgin River. :) I liked Doc Martin, but if the Brits are a challenge, well, that's where they are. The scenery in Cornwall is great, though.

The Queen's Gambit was fantastic, Bridgerton was great escapism (and you'll love the eye candy), and Firefly Lane was entertaining, too. I just finished After Life and laughed out loud a lot, but if the F bomb bothers you, well, the language is pretty consistently raw. LOL. We also really enjoyed Last Tango in Halifax, but it's British.

    1. The F word doesn't bother me if it fits the character but just about EVERY character in 'The Range' used it in every other sentence. I've used raw language myself more often than I should but the storylines in The Range are not worth the time either.

I've saved the Queen's Gambit and Bridgerton on My List. I'll let you all know later how I like them.

  11. I basically watch only shows imported from Europe ( not just England) and have to specific channels to do that. Last night's was Danish. I also think(know actually) that seven brides for seven brothers is one of the best musicals of all time especially when it comes to the dancing and I prefer my classic movies black and white instead of colorized. But it's not an age thing I know plenty of 30 year olds discovering 12 Angry men and Fail safe. I would suggest the extra money for Prime is a good deal. The new Reacher will come on the 4th. There's Bosch and a hist of other things. If you like Virgin River check out Sweet magnolias. I started liking Virgin River but they destroyed the books.warch Schitts Cteek. Just Watch it. 12. Sigh. I can't be of much help, since I dont' watch tv. The only streaming service I have is Amazon Prime, and every time I get the impulse to look at their offerings, I can't find anything that appeals. One place you might look is YouTube. More and more often, concerts, individual artists, plays, and such are streamed there in their entirety. For example, the BBC Proms are there. Also, YouTube has a bunch of free movies. 16. Lots of good suggestions here. If you find you can tolerate the F bombs that even appear in 'After Life', give 'Derek' a try. I watched that series 5 times, but I love Ricky Gervais. The profanity! I'm not a Puritan either, but it's overdone and I agree, just filler beyond a certain point. How any of the production companies think that kind of language adds to the appeal is beyond me. Yucko.

    1. I've watched four episodes of 'After Life' and haven't noticed any excessive use of the F-bombs so far. I can see profanity being right for certain characters like in the Military romances I read on occasion but in 'The Ranch' all the characters including a school teacher using the F word.

I've add 'Derek' to my growing list. Thanks.

    2. What are your options for the cable package? Can you opt out of anything besides the major networks? If so, with a Roku, (which is a small simple remote with a simple plug in to the rear of your smart TV and a user friendly set up) you CAN choose which channels you watch, most with a 7 day free trial which is adequate to decide whether you want to subscribe. I've subscribed to Acorn TV, and I'm really loving it however it's heavy on Australian and English productions. I find the Aussies easier to understand than the Brits, but I like them both.

After watching the fourth episode of 'After Life', which had a disgusting segment with the bearded guy who doesn't seem to have any interests other than sex and how awful his life is, I'll have to agree with another commenter who said this season isn't living up to the first two.

There's a series on Acorn called '800 Words' which follows a man who lost his wife and moves to a small coastal town in New Zealand. It's funny, well written, has engaging characters, and gorgeous photography.

Sign up at Roku.com, check out your options, then wait for the email that will give you the $99 unit for $69.99. I started with the cheapest one and moved up to this one, and love it. It has ear buds which might help with the hearing part of things, the remote with volume and mute button, and a remote finder which I use more often than I care to admit.

I hope this wasn't TMI. When I'm excited about something I tend to sound preachy when I don't mean to.

    3. My problem is that I only have the one smart TV and it's in the bedroom and if I try switch the smart one with the dumb one in the living room I not only have a size problem I really can't stand watching the poor service we get here on the antennas in the bedroom...it's so hit and miss on any given day. The IT guy tells me it's because of the deck roof interference.

I can't opt out of the cable here because it's free and wouldn't save me anything and I really don't want to buy another smart TV right now when I have a perfectly good picture on the old one hooked up to their free cable. I truly miss being able to have the same thing playing in each room so I'm not tied down. But my time with the TV on has been cut back 90% since I moved here and I'm okay with that.

I agree about the Australian and English accents!

I just think I cut to the chase quickly becoz I don't have the patience not to just be direct. *winks* I can't watch Old People TV either and the Seniors banter doesn't interest me as much as what the Young people are talking about, which can be juicy and hilarious... and I got a lot of that around here to listen to now, so I'm Golden, you just never know what they're going to talk about next. As for what to watch, I'm now going to try Jane the Virgin based on your description. And your description reminds me of The Good Place, which is also campy, silly, never know what they will do next. I really enjoyed it, possibly because of the pandemic? Or maybe I just enjoyed the zany way they played throughout the series. But maybe give it 3-4 episodes to see what you think (what do you have to lose - Ted Danson is in it and I hope you love him as much as I do.) 18. I agree with those recommending The Kominsky Method and After Life, but the current season of After Life isn't grabbing me the same way as the previous two. A series I loved but which requires closed captions was the Scandinavian noir series Trapped. The characters all look like regular people and have fleshed-out lives. It's moody. However, since there's an inherited form of hearing loss in my family (one grandchild is deaf) and since I tend to watch TV only late in the evening as a bridge between working and settling into sleep, I've usually taken my hearing aids out by the time I watch TV. I need closed captioning whatever the native language of the show. My husband is bothered by them, but I am not.

  19. I tried to like Jane the Virgin, but that voiceover stuff bothered me. You have to get to Season 2 of Schitt's Creek before you become emotionally invested in it. I loved it then. We recently finished watching all 5 seasons of "Friday Night Lights". I'd heard for years about just how good it was & finally made the decision to watch. It helped that Connie Britton is in it & I first watched her in "Nashville". Nashville's storyline is about getting into & staying in the country music industry. It was a joy to watch as it gave me insight into what happens in the industry in general & how people deal with/or run from those issues. But I REALLY loved it for the music, which was nearly all written specifically for the show. (Sorry if you're not into country music.)

One last thing...if you come across the Good Witch, it also is a joy to watch. It's the same "down to earth" type series that Heartland is, with comedy & romance along with drama. Good Witch started with Chris Potter as the husband, but he became a regular on Heartland & had to leave Good Witch. Good Witch started with 7 movies & then became a 7 season series, all starring Catherine Bell. (You can watch the series without seeing the movies first & still enjoy it.) Catherine Bell is also one of the stars of Army Wives, which also ran for 7 seasons.

    1. Oh, I am into country music. Big time and I'm added 'Nashville' to my list. Have not heard about 'RuPaul Drag Race'. I seem to be into "campy" lately so I'm looking forward to checking this show out.

I've never been a fan of the 'Good Witch' TV show or Catherine Bell's role in it. I loved her in Army Wives, though.

      Thanks for your input!
