Dentists and Voting Twice

There is a dentist office within walking distance to where I live that I've gone to for two and a half years. The dentist who previously took care of my teeth for nearly twenty years left his practice during Covid and his practice was bought out by a just-out-of-dental-school girl---young woman if I want to be political correct. The one and only time I saw her I really didn't actually SEE her at all. She was dressed in a head-to-toe pink hazmat suit and goggles. So was her dental assistant but the receptionist bravely had forgone wearing the hazmat suit and goggles but she had the full face guard and mask on as the other two wore. It was a surreal experience but that wasn't the reason I never when back. I mean who could blame them for protecting themselves during the height of the pandemic, a pandemic made worse by then President Trump who, at the time, was telling people about drinking bleach as bodies were stacking up in refrigerated trucks outside of hospitals. We tend to forget how bad things were back then. Now, we learn that Bob Woodward has Trump on a taped interview admitting---I say bragging---that he sent Vladimire Putin a Covid-19 test machine in the early days of the pandemic when we didn't have enough of them to go around to the hospitals here in the States.

I thought about all this while I was getting my teeth cleaned this week by an overly perky dental hygienist. The Woodward reveal must have put me in a surly mood because I was doing an amazing job of being borderline hostile to Miss Mary Sunshine. My replies were short, usually one word at a time---as if you can do more than that while your mouth is full of instruments. Why to they feel the need for a running conversation at a time like that? And why did I feel like making her work even harder than she was at trying to connect to me? When she announced she was finished, I couldn't believe it. It felt like she'd barely touched my teeth. There was no scaler tool used to scrap plaque off. It's done with sound waves now and what little poking around she did felt like she was applying about as much pressure as Tinkerbell could use. I was disappointed!

The next day I got three requests to fill out a survey about my visit to their humongous practice. The first two I ignored and the third one I opened, then filled out. I was kind and I didn't bad mouth the hygienist or the job she did. But I'll admit that I did start to type a comment about her trying too hard to be perky. Then I backed those words off my computer screen about as fast as I typed them in. What the heck was wrong with me? In a world full of hate and indifference I'll take perky and trying too hard any day. She was young and trying to put me as ease and I was being grumpy and jaded by something that had nothing to do with my teeth cleaning appointment.

I do miss my old dentist though. He was a friend before he became our dentist and there was nothing we couldn't say to one another but the guy liked to nit-pick and one time he wanted to remove two of my silver fillings. I hated to see them go. I’ve had them since my teen years---I was in my 60s at the time---but he thought they were worn out and in danger of cracking thus would damage the teeth in the process. He showed me photos of their surfaces to make his case. I told him I was sentimental about those fillings. He said, “Get over it.” And that’s how I ended up on his schedule to get two, new shiny white fillings. In a few weeks I'll be getting a new crown to replace one of those fillings. I'd put this off for the past year and finally consented to the work. I don't entirely trust dentists not to make up stuff that needs replacing. And why does the proposed work miraculously always cost what's left in my dental insurance plan? But I'm not one to gamble either on letting things go thus costing more in the long run.

Change in topic: I voted twice. Sixty-eight people in my building have to do that. We were sent ballots with the wrong school district candidates the first time and those ballots, if sent in already, will get rejected. There are a few people here who have no sense of logic and one of them was at a lunch table and she was worried she'd get in trouble with the law if she filled out the second ballot. No amount of trying to explain that she won't was getting through. "How will they know I'm not trying to vote twice for president?" "Because they set their machines up to invalidate the first ballots coming from our building so you'll only show up as voting once when you send in your new ballot." I was talking to MAGA voter and I wish I'd just let her think that using that second ballot will put her in jail. I use the tracking-your-ballot website to check on my vote and this year I'll actually have something interesting to see between the two ballot numbers I have to check on. When I told her that she said, "You can do that?" Duh! "Yes, that's why it gives the web address for tracking on the envelope." (In 20 point fonts, no less.) I could feel my grumpy and jaded persona creeping back in and I changed the topic to the hurricane. And that got me even grumpier when someone at the table parroted the lies Trump has been is telling about FEMA's response, lies that have just today the news is reporting have resulted in armed threats against FEMA workers at a couple of their staging sites. Why are some people so quick to believe the conspiracy nonsense coming out of Trump's mouth over that of the boots-on-the-ground disaster personal?  ©

  1. You should have allowed the MAGAt to forego Voting the 2nd time... winks.

    1. I want the election over but then I don't. I really am scared of the outcome.

  3. Have you ever had occasion to deal with FEMA -- perhaps during a blizzard or such? I've experienced FEMA's way of dealing with disasters up close and personal: most directly after Allison in 2001, when flooding meant stripping our house down to the studs and rebuilding. Louisiana friends and customers dealt with FEMA after Rita and Katrina, and after Ike, when half of my customers were wiped out, many of my suddenly homeless friends never received a lick of help from FEMA. Then came Harvey, Laura, Beryl... After those storms, I didn't have a friend, co-worker, or passing acquaintance with anything good to say about the FEMA response. I know FEMA money helped with things like debris removal, but the vaunted 'blue roof' program and the provision of temporary housing weren't all they were cracked up to be.

Criticisms of FEMA have been around for a long time. A bloated, inefficient bureaucracy seems to have developed in the agency, as well as a sense of territoriality and a desire to be the "resource of first resort." I can't speak at all to what has happened or not happened in North Carolina, or in Florida with Milton, but I do know this: no one I know would prefer FEMA's assistance over the NGOs, local governments, and local individuals that have the flexibility to be first on scene, and the experience that makes them useful helpers.

Oddly, I do have favorite memories from some storms. One involves the group of farmers and ranchers that got out with their chainsaws and cleared the highway between Lufkin and Nacogdoches only hours after Ike's landfall. The other involves the youth group from a Baptist church who showed up as soon as we could get back into the neighborhood after Allison, handing out apples, peanut butter sandwiches, and water to anyone in need. As a neighbor said later, the motto for storm recovery should be "See need, fill need -- not see need, fill out a form." (OK -- end of grump. Lots of memories here!)

    1. With destruction as wide spread as it is with hurricanes and western fires, no group---private or government---can do the recovery alone. I like the "See need, fill need." I have no experience with FEMA or living through a disaster so I can't speak to anything other than I don't think it helps anyone to have an x-president purposely inspire armed guys to go hunt FEMA workers. He's a pot stirrer with no other goal than to cause trouble when they least need it. If he was as rich as he claims to be why isn't he donation millions of dollars to help like Taylor Swift to World Kitchen to feed people down there or Dolly Parton to help with rebuilding?

    2. Sometimes my disengagement from social media and media in general leaves me a bit out of the loop. I wasn't aware of the threats against FEMA workers, but just read a bit about them, including interviews with a couple of people who were briefly arrested. The frustrations I've had or heard about with the agency certainly never were tinged with a hint of 'let's go get'em.' Whatever Trump (or anyone else) did or didn't say, what's clear is that social media can play a terrible role in such a situation. Gossip and rumors used to be spread person to person. Now, they fly around the entire country in a flash, and it can be devilishly hard to sort out what's true and what isn't. Add frustration with bureacracies' slow pace, and the pain of terrible losses, and it's a volatile mix.

    3. That's true. With Trump's own platform and Musk's X (formerly Twitter) they have spread lies about FEMA so quickly and local governments have had to try to dispel the falsehoods at a time when they they'd have better use of their time. We have way too many information sources now and no fairness doctrine in the media like there used to be when the FCC had teeth and we only had the three big networks.

    4. I've had direct experience with FEMA, after Hurricane Ian flooded our house and neighborhood 2 years ago. A FEMA inspector was in my house 2 days later, looking at the damage and everything we lost, and we had a check within the next couple of weeks. It wasn't enough to repair all the damage, of course, but it was substantial and it was fast. I have nothing but good things to say about my experience with FEMA.

    5. Denise -- I'm glad to hear of your good experience. One thing that's clear is that experiences vary widely: not only with agencies like FEMA, but also with insurance companies. It's probably inevitable, but where there are problems, it sure would be better to put energy into improving the systems.

  4. Seeing a dentist or any other medical person dressed head to toe in hazmat gear would make me nervous and I wouldn't go back. Sounds like the woman just rubbed you thew wrong way.

Having to vote twice would be annoying.

  5. ...and now you know why you're so crabby! It's hard to maintain your Zen when there's so much negativity going on around us. Here in Ohio we have a big senate race, so every single ad is for one of the two candidates, and the republican's are full of fear tactics and lies. It's beyond irritating. I just keep my vow to Default To Kindness, always. I refuse to add to the bad stuff already out there.

    1. Being in a battle ground state we are getting tons of mail and TV commercials and of course, on social media. Your vow to Default to Kindness is a good mantra for me to remember now through the election. So far I have been civil but I feel a slow boil underneath when I run into some of the stupid reasons why someone is voting for Trump.

  6. I was surprised to read that you were so grumpy at the dentist's office. You always come across as a pretty upbeat, funny, friendly person. I think we are all getting a bit tense as the election gets closer. I can't wait for the election to be over. I'm hoping for Harris/Walz and I think we will all be extremely grumpy and despondent if they don't win. Ugh! I can't even let myself think of it.

    1. I don't really think the people at the dentist office thought I was grumpy as I didn't really say anything I shouldn't have. It's was just that I'm usually more engaged. She probably caulked it up to be not liking to be in a dentist chair...or being old and senile. LOL

I too can't wait until the election is over, but I fear it as well.

  7. I have a horrible habit of calling women "girls" and men "young men". I have to clarify, a girl of you know, 40. It's just that they all seem sooo young! I would have been more than tempted to tell the trumpers that they better not vote because it would be voting twice. I am a nervous wreck, sick to my stomach.
My husband did crack a filling. It was $1200 for a root canal and $1600 for a new filling and cap. We do not have dental insurance so BAM. The dentist suggested redoing his remaining fillings (he has several). I think we are going to change dentists.

    1. I wish young women didn't get offended being called a 'girl' but some do. I just can't get used to it. When we older women call young women girls I hope they consider the source and know it's not a sign of disrespect.

At one time I had silver fillings in all my back teeth and they lasted for 4-5 decades. Most of the replacement fillings they got didn't last ten years before they had to be done over. Changing dentist about doubled what I get charged. This new office has all the latest equipment. But being in walking distance is a big deal in my eighties so I won't be shopping around for a new place. I did change dentists within the complex and I might change hygienists if this one still seems too phony, perky next time. It could have just been me, my bad mood, so I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt.

  8. I live in NC. FEMA, the governor, the president and people who need fema have all said that is a lie. The one guy who was bitching his daughter never got hers, the address was incorrect or some such BS. Boy he shut up then! Bet he won't tell his maga cult members that tid bit. Thank God for good reporting on this topic locally because it is a purple state. God I want Harris to globber this stupid demented evil man!!

    1. He really is an evil person! And his lies about FEMA aren't helping to build his base. I wish before my life is over that we can return to the kind of elections we had where we didn't physically fear the other side winning. Elections where we knew both candidates had the country's best interests at heart and the yin and yang of politics kept each side in check and meeting in the middle to move us forward. I truly hate what he's done to your country!

  9. I went to a new dentist last month after the previous one sold his practice to Skippy, the world's most enthusiastic dentist ever. I look forward to watching this guy turn into a more jaded dentist, which he will after he deals with patients for a few years.

    1. Thank for this. I will now look forward to watching Ms. Perk mellow out over my next few cleanings. Sometimes we need to be reminded of what it was like to be young and enthusiastic about their chosen profession.

  10. Former dental hygienist here. I tried to keep the "chatter" to a minimum but often it helped to get the patient's mind off of what was going on in their mouth. I wish I had a dollar for every patient who told me to my face they "hated" having their teeth cleaned and "hated" hygienists. As to yours not doing a thorough job, the ultrasonic instruments do a great job with little tissue damage or discomfort. I always felt that I was in a lose-lose situation. If the cleaning was uncomfortable for the patient, it was my fault. (No matter how bad the patient's hygiene was.) If the cleaning was comfortable, I didn't do a good job in their opinion because it didn't hurt.

During the pandemic I really had great sympathy for the doctors and dentists who continued to see patients and had to wear all the protective gear. Remember, there were refrigerated trucks in some cities to hold the overflow of dead bodies. I think too many of those occurances have been "memory holed" by the populace. Hence, the subsequent second coming of Trump.

    1. My former dentist and eye doctor both retired early because of the pandemic. It was a scary time for them. I remember having to show our vaccine cards to get any kind of medical care but people forget so much that went on.

I've never been afraid of dentists or hygienists or hated them. The only thing I really don't like is when they take that series of round x-rays they do every five years. Probably isn't so bad now that they have the camera wand rather than the bite plates. We shall see next spring.

  11. Well, I go to that dental office, as you know, and I have had the same hygienist for years now, so we actually kind of catch up. And we have matching dogs. :-) That said, I don't appreciate anyone who is overly cheerful. Ha! I do think that is the work ethic in that office though. (And they were all in full cover hazmat suits during Covid.)
How tempting it would be to let that MAGAt think their first ballot counted. I am also nervous about this election, but trying to remain hopeful. The ability people have to overlook pretty much anything the Orange Felon does continues to amaze me. I'll also be glad when the blizzard of election junk mail subsides.

    1. Me too on the junk mail blizzard---great phrase by the way.

That dental office does the 'cheerful' well. When the dentist walked he said, "Thank four sharing part of your day with us." LOL I switched dentists within the practice so got an unexpected double dose of 'cheerful' that day. Had the left-handed dentist a couple of times and neighbors here all agreed that one I switched to is better, less apt to add things to do inside our mouths.

  12. Well, that's a first to me! Having to vote twice!! I will be so glad when all that junk mail STOPS. It should be against the law to waste that much paper and postage. Honestly, I think I get the SAME thing every other day.

It's almost time to give up Facebook. How does anyone know what is true? Am I just turning into a curmudgeon?

    1. The wasted paper bothers me too BUT I try to remember there are lots of people's jobs involved in designing, printing and selling ads in the junk mail we get. Take junk mail out of the system and the post office would also go broke as well. And for national defense and national disaster purposes we need the data base that only the post office maintains.

I still love Facebook for the short reels and family stuff. Knowing what's true and what isn't still boils down to knowing the source and which ones to trust. And we must learn to spot AI produced stuff just like wa all learned to spot photoshopped stuff.
