Back in the Game Again

Five days, five appointments this week. Ready or not I’m back in the game only we have a new umpire in charge called Covid-19. Covid-19 is an evil umpire who calls people out who didn’t do anything wrong and his calls are slower than the slowest pitch on record. We can go out and about wearing our masks and social distancing but we have to wait two weeks to see if the virus tags us and umpire orders us off the playing field. It’s a brave new world out there. In no particular order my appointments included getting nearly naked for the dermatologist, getting that long awaited haircut, having my air conditioner serviced, having lunch in the park with my Gathering Girls pals and I got my rain gutters cleaned out.

Getting my gutters cleaned out turned out to be annoying because it pointed out how wimpy I am when someone challenges my sense of business ethics and political opinions. The job took the guy a half hour and he apologized for having to charge his minimum rate of $125 but I was fine with that---his insurance rates for doing roof and ladder work have to be horrendous. Then he said if I could pay in cash he’d make it $100. I didn't have that much cash on hand and even if I did I still wouldn’t have gone for that deal because you know those cash payments aren’t being claimed on his income tax. “So what?” you ask. It makes it harder for competitors who don’t cheat the IRS to compete fair and square in the market place. His business cards have Bible scriptures on them---not uncommon where I live--- however, it ticks me off when Christians claim moral superiority at the same time they are doing something unethical that my husband and I never did when we were in business.

When the guy got ready to leave he asked how I was doing and I said, “Given all the stuff we’ve been dealing with this year, I’m doing okay.” That was all it took to get him started with the Trump sock puppet talk: Yadda, yadda, yadda, and “The president should sent in the Army to stop those protesters.” I pointed out that it’s against the constitution to use our military against U.S. citizens. And he replies, “I’m not so sure of that. There are lawyers all over the place and they would said something if that were true.” Hello!!!! Lots of lawyers, constitutional scholars and top military men have called out the president for saying he'd send in the federal troops if governors didn't stop the protests. Then he says, “I think Trump was called up by God to stop all the corruption in Washington and we have to make sure he gets four more years to get the job done.”

I would have liked to have screamed, “Get off my porch!” but aside from being speechless, I’m not confrontational face-to-face. Instead, I worked on perfecting the ‘icy-stare of disapproval’ until he wound himself down like a leaky balloon. What gulls me is how a near stranger can look at a white woman like me and just assume I’m going to agree with his not-so-thinly veiled racist comments about "those people" and all that destruction "over one man dying while getting arrested." I’ve had that happen often enough that I’ve wondered, what do people like him think a liberal Democrat looks like? Do they think we all have horns growing out of our heads? Do they assume we're all inner-city minorities? I need to take that icy-stare of disapproval up a notch because sock puppets are not as good at reading body language as they used to be.

Leaving the low point of my week behind, let me tell you about my high point…the first Gathering Girls brunch since March. With the stay-at-home orders recently lifted, five of the seven of us were happy to to meet up again (two couldn't make it). Restaurants in Michigan are open, but they are only allowed to operate at 50% capacity and they are placing time limits on how long you can linger with a meal and who can blame them? Aside from that, two of us aren’t willing to chance going into restaurants so soon, while the other three ladies had already done it since they’ve re-opened. Long story short I scouted out a little park near-by where the five of us each brought our own food from home or take out and we social distanced ourselves at long picnic tables under a pavilion on a beautiful, sunny day for 2 1/2 hours.

Our conversation was more subdued than in the past and with all our country’s been through this year I was not surprised. We did have some good belly laughs though and we poked fun of our uncut and uncolored hair and I learned who I’m not sitting near the next time we meet. One lady confessed that she’s been bad and was sneaking out and about for several weeks, even before the stay-at-home orders were lifted. I told her, “You kissed dead on the mouth last year with your cancer bout no wonder you’re not afraid of dying from Covid-19, but I still am!” She knows how to take a joke and repeated the line about kissing death on the mouth several times, saying she wanted to remember that one to tell her daughter. But germaphobic that I am, I was wishing I could have scooted myself farther down the table from her since I was sitting only five, not six feet away. All and all it was wonderful being with friends again and we’re going to restart our bi-monthly schedule. I’m back in the game of life again. I just hope I’m not sowing the seeds of my own demise.  ©

  1. I'm so glad you can get together with friends again, but I agree, stay away from the careless ones!

    Fingers crossed!

  2. I've yet to venture out to any normal activities like you did. I want to do such things, but the soonest I could get appointments with docs/hair stylist are in September... which by then may find us locked down again. I'll live vicariously through you and your exciting life until I can get out and about again.

    1. Wow, a September hair cut appointment! That's really a long time to wait! I actually wish I hadn't gotten a haircut because I had such a good start on growing it out. I even told the girl I wanted to continue growing it out and just get a trim, but she shortened it quite a bit.

You really live a boring life if you're living vicariously through mine. LOL

  3. Oh lordy, I would have a hard time holding my tongue with an idiot like that. But getting your gutters cleaned is the goal, so I would probably not get too confrontational either. It does astound me that there are still people drinking that Kool-Aid. Or that believe that God put him there. Wow. Just wow.

It's so uplifting to get out and about even just a bit, isn't it? I had a haircut this week, and it really lifted my spirits. We are in the middle of moving (rented van today, real movers Thursday), and my house is a hot mess...the kind where things are everywhere, boxes are half packed, and our belongings are between two places. LOL. I just keep hoping I remember to leave enough to be comfortable here and no more. And I was fortunate enough to get a refrigerator! My original choice wasn't available...apparently the pandemic is causing serious supply chain and factory issues with production. Oy vey. But onward and upward. Cheers!

    1. How exciting for you! The supply chain factor is causing problems for my future home as well. No point getting too upset about it, though. It's no ones fault.

This guy has done work for me several times in the past and he's very good at his job. He's always let his religion show up front and center. I grew up in this City of Churches so that part doesn't bother me. But this is the first time he's talked politics. I really wish he hadn't because I'll need a bunch of power washing done next year before I put my house up for sale---house, deck, driveway and sidewalks---and it goes against my grain to knowingly give money to rabid Trump supporters. I may let the election decide if he gets the job or I go with an Angel's list pick.

    2. Hire someone else my Friend, I wouldn't give that guy any more business... just saying Twitler was sent by God would have sent me over the edge, you hold back with Grace and dignity! *LOL*

    3. Not so much Grace and dignity. When people think they have God on their side there is no way to have a logic conversation with them.

  4. When I was in the ICU after my surgery, one of my nurses went on and on about politics (and we were NOT in agreement). He moaned and moaned about the taxes he paid and he thought the president was just great! We agreed to disagree but he kept bringing it up. At one point he was getting ready to put in a new IV line and I was looking at this LONG needle-like thing he was going to put in my arm and I said, "Ooo, I should NOT have told you I was a democrat!" But we laughed and he was very gentle so...
But I am not a good debater and wish I was better at answering people when I hear the outrageous claims and outright lies!
How nice to visit with friends! I think sitting outside really does lower the risk for you and I will do that when I have friends to visit again. Thanks again for a great post!

    1. I can't think of a worse place to be in than an patient in ICU listening to the political views of someone from the opposite party. My blood pressure would go up. My husband could give as good as he got in a political debate and he didn't hold back like I do. It's so hard when you weren't brought up to make waves. Thanks for sharing that!

  6. Well his political views explains why he wanted cash. Trump doesn't pay his taxes either--or so we would know if he ever turned them over for examination. Work on that icy stare.
The picnic seems a great idea for a gathering. Always amazed at people you would think would know better that flit about not taking any precautions. Try to get up wind of her next time.

    1. My mom was good at the icy stare. So are a lot of moms, I'm going to need a refresher class.

I know what you mean. I saw some interviews of people on TV explaining why they weren't wearing masks and they all sounded selfish. "I never get sick." "I think the numbers are hyped." "The virus is fake."

  7. I'm still being a stay at home. Stockpiling masks for a winter resurgence! Since Oregon opened it's stay at home, cases have gone UP. Whether more or better testing OR more contact, I'm lucky enough to have human and dog interaction and stay put.

I wonder what would happen if we would quietly say "I have a complete opposite opinion of this, so let's change the subject"? I'd LOVE to do that!

    1. We may never get rid of the Covid-19 virus if people don't all get on the same page at the same tie AND we get a vaccine...so masks are going to be a part of our wardrobe for a long time.

With a few people who I really like and who are Trump supporters I have said, "We need to quit talking about this topic" and that has worked well. I do occasionally try to understand where/how people come by their opinions, but when I feel myself getting frustrated, I have to change the topic.

  8. We are on a Phase approach in Washington State, county by county, so not the same in the whole state. We are now in Phase 2 in my county, so there is some loosening of the 'stay at home' orders, but those over 65 (and/or with underlying conditions) are supposed to "stay home" until Phase 4! Of course this is being ignored. Still, I have gone only to the grocery store a few times, the pharmacy, and Lowe's Hardware once. I did a distancing visit with a friend for her BD outside. We've had outside, distancing picnics without family a couple of times. That's it. We are being very, very cautious while also trying not to be overly paranoid. It's a delicate dance. Glad you are getting out though. Just, you know, be careful out there. :)

    1. Trust me, I am being careful and every place I've been except the park required taking a temperature before going in plus using their hand sanitizing both coming and going. I've only been to the grocery store every 3 weeks March to June and the dog groomer for a quick handoff. In June I added a few medical appointments and the haircut. I haven't even bought fast food or food picked up curbside from better restaurants since March and just went to Starbucks once. Stay fast out there!

  9. Back in the late 1990's I worked for an ophthalmologist who was an older guy who was raised in Alabama and whose well-off family had black "servants." It so happened that we were working on Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday when this couple who were long time patients came in. I was at the desk with my other two co-workers. The husband kind of sneered at us and asked "You mean, you're working on N****r Day?" I was so shocked I didn't know how to react. Coming from California, I had never encountered out and out racism like that. He and his wife went on to complain about the retinal specialist's office we had referred them to. It seems since it was in San Antonio most of the health professionals in that office were Hispanic, and this pair didn't like that either. It fell to me to take the two of them back to the exam room to check their vision before the doctor came in. I really wanted to say something, but a.) I was too chickenshit and b.) I didn't know if it was something that would get me fired. The best I came up with was, when I was done and leaving the room, the wife said "At least you're white" and I shot back over my shoulder "Are you sure about that?" I regret not speaking out to this day.

    1. Wow, I can see why you were speechless and being in the work place you really were in a difficult situation to counter that racism. We took a vacation in the 1990s to Texas and we were shocked at the open racism we saw and heard. Racism in Michigan was still a part of life back then---red lining, etc.---but not so up in your face and unashamed like it was down there.

  11. I'm glad you got out with Friends again while taking precautions. But what the one Friend confessed is my biggest concern, we don't really know what people expose themselves to or who, do we, or what risks they're willing to take that we wouldn't? Now we have to discern all of that with every other Human Being, it's exhausting! As for Fundie Christian Dude, why am I not at all surprised at the lack of ethics and being a Cult Follower. Twitler seems to have all the Fundamentalist Types enamored of him and how shocking that anyone who professes to be Godly and SO Fanatically Religious, always has so many vile Hang-Ups that make a blatant Sinner look like a freakin' Boy Scout! For some reason if you are a White Woman the Racists and Twitler Lovers just assume you're one of them, it's uncomfortably Weird. Once a Customer at the Antique Mall, while buying a MAGA Hat, made a very Racist statement about "The Blacks" and said to me, "You know what I mean?"... and becoz I have Dreads and sometimes get mistaken for a mixed race light skinned Black Woman now by some, couldn't help myself... I looked him straight in the Eye and said, "Yes, I'm Black...", he went a Whiter shade of Pale and it was hilarious to see his Oh Fuck reaction! *Bwahahahahahaha!*

    1. Trump has none of the qualities that I've grown up believing Christians valued. He doesn't even pretend to be a good human being. Its' so weird seeing the so-called men of God lay hands on him in prayer. It's like he's challenging all their inner hate and pettiness and they love him for it.

Love how you put the racist at your mall in his place.

    2. There was a fascinating Study/Special on TV Tonight about "Why People Hate", it delves into the Psychology of how Humans can be manipulated and trained to behave a certain kind of way so easily. We're really Herd Animals that behave to suit certain environments and expectations it seems, not surprising, I've Witnessed Herd and Hive Mentality for a long time, so much of what they had to say I've always suspected. Causing divisions in Humans is far easier than creating unity, you just have to make another side of "others" that are a perceived threat and tap into that Fear. They said it's not the Extremists we should ever worry about, they're only about 9% of total populations that tend towards Extremism... it's the regular folks that can be lured in and manipulated that become the real threat to Society, Unity and Order.

    3. I wish I'd seen that special! Trump sure has a natural talent for pitting sides against one another. Who would have ever guessed that wearing a mask or not would become a red/blue issue. Thanks for sharing this. Maybe the show will get repeated. I'll get an eye out for it,

    3. Either there are more of us or we're getting more willing to reveal we are liberal democrats or a little of both. I know I have been willing to show my strips in the last few years starting when I started hearing people maligning Obama's character.

  13. I'm a Mom and a former Teacher. I've got an Icy Stare that is Lethal. Additionally, as a former writing Teacher and current Writer, my vocabulary is my most high-powered and dangerous weapon, should I choose to use it. Often, just the Stare and a measured "I see" in a deadly tone is enough to shut these morons up.

    1. Florida has not had a very responsible or pro-active governor
and that wouldn't make me feel very good about going out either. Here in Michigan our governor locked us down early on and we've finally peaked. But 67,957 cases here and 6,097 deaths is not to be taken lightly and a no one wants a second wave. Lots of changes in the way everyone is doing business.

  15. It was a good solution to have your brunch in the park instead of in a restaurant. Now that the science seems to be showing that outdoor interaction is not just a little safer than indoor interaction, but a lot safer, I'm starting to relax a little about outdoor gatherings. When my book group met last week, we were sitting outdoors, more than 6' apart, and all wearing masks. This week, I'm actually going to have a friend over to sit outdoors on my porch, about 7' apart, and take masks off to indulge in strawberry shortcake and ice tea. (It's strawberry season here.)
As far as masks go, I've decided to turn them into a fashion accessory, collecting them in colorful prints and choosing masks to coordinate with my clothing. You would have laughed to hear me on the phone this week with a designer/seamstress in New York who is sewing masks while she is laid off from her job as a dresser with the Metropolitan Opera. I had received one of her masks as a gift and immediately called to order two more; but first she had to describe the fabrics she had available so that I could choose. (I went with the Ralph Lauren pink and red floral print and the 1960s Marimekko teal and blue print.)

    1. Might was well have fun with the masks. We'll be wearing them at least until next spring I'm guessing. Lots of choices online at Amazon and e-Bay but what I've discovered is they are coming from China and take forever. Got to refine searches by distance. You're going to love your masks!
