Welcome to the Misadventures of Widowhood blog!

Welcome to my World---Woman, widow, senior citizen seeking to live out my days with a sense of whimsy as I search for inner peace and friendships. Jeez, that sounds like a profile on a dating app and I have zero interest in them, having lost my soul mate of 42 years. Life was good until it wasn't when my husband had a massive stroke and I spent the next 12 1/2 years as his caregiver. This blog has documented the pain and heartache of loss, my dark humor, my sweetest memories and, yes, even my pity parties and finally, moving past it all. And now I’m ready for a new start, in a new location---a continuum care campus in West Michigan, U.S.A. Some people say I have a quirky sense of humor that shows up from time to time in this blog. Others say I make some keen observations about life and growing older. Stick around, read a while. I'm sure we'll have things in common. Your comments are welcome and encouraged. Jean

Binging Netflixs, TV Habits and a Trip to Memory Lane

I d
on't watch a lot of television which is a stark change from my viewing habits before moving to this continuum care campus in 2021. Back in my other life I had three TVs---one in the bedroom, the living room and the kitchen---and often they'd all be turned on to mostly CNN from morning to night. To say I was a news junkie would be an understatement. And I loved the freedom of not having to sit in one place to watch something. I could do my housework, work on my computer or hobbies, be at the beck and call of my disabled husband and take care of life's other requirements without missing a thing on TV.

There are several reasons why I no longer watch TV as much as I used to do. Aside from there being a lot of things to do on campus, liking going to a staff retirement party this afternoon and a Memorial Day presentation tomorrow, I hate the fact that we only have one TV hook up to the free cable aka they didn't wire the building so people can have cable TV in the bedrooms. If we want to pay $145 we can get an exterior cable strung around our living room and through the wall to the bedroom but I'd hate the visual of a cable going along the baseboard and up around the door frame. It seems too ghetto to me. So in the bedroom I have a TV with a modern version of the old rabbit ears but it has limited channels to watch and try as I might there is no way to set both TVs to the same program at the same time. At bedtime in my old life, I always watched the late night comedians but I can't do that here. So my bedroom TV has morphed into a binge-watching Netflix box. Question: Is it just me, or has Netflix been offering fewer new choices in the last couple of months?

Currently I'm binging a show with four seasons and I'll polish off the last season this coming week so I’m looking for suggestions for another binge worthy series. I like political stuff like Madame Secretary and Designated Survivor, crime stuff like Black List, White Collar, The Recruit, Night Desk and Ozark. I love law series, too, like Suits and Your Honor. Sci-fi like Roswell and Lost. Quirky stuff like Shameless, In the Dark, Loudermilk, Hab and Lenard, Six Feet Under, North of North, This is Us and Dead to Me. I've also binged on more "normal" choices like Grey Anatomy, Bridgeton, Outlander, and Downton Abby. I say 'more normal choices" because, with the exception of Downton Abby, I've yet to find any of my fellow residents who have the same tastes in Netflixs that I do, and with regular TV I've only found one person who likes American Idol and Shark Tank which are the only shows besides cable news that I currently watch.

Though, it goes without saying that my Liberal Ladies, Tuesday night dinner companions and I all consume a lot of the same news shows. I love our Tuesday dinners. There are twelve of us with three others who would love to join us but we can't make reservations for more than twelve, so they fill in when someone can't make it. Speaking of large groups there are sixteen Catholics living here and recently I landed at a lunch table with five-six of them. They were bashing the new pope. It seems that before becoming the pope he criticized the moral fiber of the president. I had to bite my lip from asking how they can justify accepting a different standard of morality for 45/47 than they do for the common man on the street. Aren't we all supposed to do our best to follow the Ten Commandants and do on to others as we would have them do on to us? "The pope needs to stay in his own lane," one of the ladies said and I came close to saying, "I personally think the pope was voted in for precisely the reason you don't like him." The Catholic hierarchy sees the evil that Trump is spreading around the world and they want a pope who isn't afraid to challenge him. I doubt that all the Catholics living here are MAGAs, but at least six are. How they can admire 45/47 and bash the pope is beyond my understanding---all the while thinking of themselves as good Christians.

Back on Topic: My current binge worthy show is Good Girls. It reminds me of Ozark because the three women who are the lead characters find themselves getting dragged deeper and deeper into a life of crime only the show is billed as a comedy so it's lighter viewing than Ozark. My favorite character is Rio played by Manny Montana---a porn star name if I've ever heard one which I'm quick to admit that that's an area I know very little about. Linda Lovelace is the only name I can come up with and she must be as old as dirt by now. And dare I say our First Lady did her share of soft porn before she hooked The Donald. Anyway, there is something about Manny's gravelly voice or the way he moves that gets to me. He's a crime boss in the series so it's not the character he plays that I like and he's not what I'd call good especially looking either. God only knows why I like the guy but if you watch the video below and have a theory let me know.

There's no smooth segway I can use to change the subject so I'll just do it. I've been walking down Memory Lane this past week. It all started when a great-nephew on my husband's side of the family reached out to me on Facebook. He wanted my address to send me an invitation to his daughter's graduation party. Mike was one of the few people who offered to help after Don's stroke and who actually followed through in a very real and meaningful way. He took on the volunteer role of being a 'personal guide' in a wheelchair hunter's group that I got Don involved in. It freed me up from doing it and it let Don do a 'guy thing' with other guys. Along with my address I sent him a couple of hunting related stories that I originally shared in a blog posts. He loved them and asked for more so I've been binge-reading old posts and feeding them to Mike who asked if he could share them with his older brother. Don was their favorite uncle and it's been nice, having Don come alive again.  ©

  1. I was just thinking Netflix has enticed me back over for some shows! And you have Amazon, right? And if you support your local public broadcasting they have great choices. I jumped on a Hulu/Disney Plus program ... 6 months at $2.99! And I will cancel when that ends.

Some I have enjoyed Lincoln Lawyer, The Rookie, Blue Bloods, CSI in any city, New Amsterdam (4-5 seasons) The NEW Matlock with Kathy Bates. And several interesting (to me) movies. I'll email you more.

Memory Lane is there for the driving. Every once in a while FB will toss up a memory and I return to relish the whole day. And the brandboys often ask me about a photo and what was happening. The circle of life.

    1. Living with grandkids, you get so many opportunities to drive down Memory Lane. That's really great for both of you.

I've only watched one thing on Amazon, Northern Exposure---a half a season for free an then they wanted to charge we hat I thought was a lot of money to see the rest of the season so I never went back to try Amazon again. I wouldn't even know now to find Hulu.

    2. Google "hulu.com" and see if they have any specials going on. MANY COMMERCIALS though!

  2. I'm glad you reconnected with the Great-Nephew who I do recall you mentioning in your Blog. As for those who profess to be Christians while being MAGA Cult Devotees, and enamored with a Devil, I just have no Words... I think most of them to be Churchy while not Godly.

    1. Christians who are MAGA devotees have rewired their thinking so that they can justify the inhumanity of 45/47's actions toward immigrants, poor people and sick people.

  3. I have only watched Netflix on the odd occasion and not in years and I can't remember the last time I binged watched anything

  4. The 24/7 news cycle during the pandemic burnt me out, plus the force feeding through work needs and now I just get the news when I intentionally look for it. It's ridiculous but there's five working televisions , all used at some point in the week plus a combo VCR/DVDTV not plugged in and a DVD only version but that's going to go to cabin with a supply of favorite DVDs. I have a problem.

    1. And to think most of that stuff was invented in our life time. I'm burned out on 24/7 news, too, and only watch about 3 hours in the evenings. But I have to be careful because something big will come along and suck me right back to turning on the TV before I make my morning coffee.

  5. I enjoyed the Great British Baking Show on Netflix and the series Derry Girls (set in Ireland). I find lots of shows on Netflix to enjoy. I also like lots of the shows on my PBS station.
It's good that you are watching less TV and have more activities to go to.
I would have a hard time keeping my mouth shut around those "Catholic" ladies who like MAGA.

  6. Here's how you can bypass that $145 extra hook-up. If you have a smart TV that has a USB port, get a Roku Express. It's like a flash drive that goes in your TV. You can get a ton of free apps on it and if you decide to spend the money for Hulu (or maybe other services but less than 145/mo) you can get just about any show out there, plus lots of movies. You can watch netflix on it or any other streaming services. It's how I watch TV now -- I see more than I did on cable for less.

    1. Thanks for the tip. I think that when they built this building they were thinking about how TV services has changed BUT they didn't consider that old people who are set in our ways would want to get our TV.

  7. We like to watch a lot of the period pieces/historical dramas. We also just finished The Four Seasons, which was quite good with Tina Fey and Steve Carell. And have you watched all the seasons of Love on the Spectrum? It's quite good and very uplifting.

I'm limiting my exposure to national news. I stay informed and am still very involved in writing to congress, but I just cannot wallow in it while the felon is in office. I have to preserve my zen.

    1. Persevering our zen is important for us to stay in the fight for the long run. We can't let up on letting our voices be heard.

The Four Seasons sure is getting a lot of push and advertising. I might have to try it but it kind of sounds too 'light' for my tastes.

  8. We don't get Netflix anymore because we felt it wasn't offering much. Of the TV shows you mention I have seen Dead to Me, but the others I am aware of just never watched. I watch 1 maybe 2 episodes of a TV show each day. I can't do the binge thing. My eyes wouldn't take it.

    1. Two a day is my average as well. By binging I mean that I will watch the same series program when ever I sit down to watch, without mixing in any others.

  9. I guess the new pope is too "woke" for MAGA by advocating for the poor, the sick and the hungry of the world. As opposed to Trump, who wants to accept a $400 million dollar jet from Qatar because he's such a special boy. Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't get people who thinking nothing wrong with him accepting that jet but they want to cut off aid to 3rd world countries. Someone here mentioned that the pope was 'woke'' and added, "I guess that's a bad thing? I don't know what 'woke' means." Several of us had a hard time defining it for her , but we ended up saying it's only a bad thing if you're a Republican because it means you have empathy for others.

  10. Hi - Recently you mentioned that you ordered some mahjong supplies from a discount place. I need to order a rubber mahjong mat (to quiet the noisy tiles). Who has the best sales/bargains? So glad you're playing mahj; I now play 2 times a week! Thanks for your help! - Liz B.

    1. You must be thinking of a different blogger because I have only bought mahjong supplies at two places and neither one are discount places. I bought two mats (and helped two others pick their mats out) at Amazon. They have plenty to choose from but my only caution is to make sure the mat come rolled. I ended up with one that was shipped folded and it took a lot of steam ironing to get the fold lines out. (Read the reviews because people do mention the folded ones.) I have also used felt (from a fabric store) in place of a mat and it works well and only cost around $8.00. Yellow Mountain brand mats are reasonably priced and are what I bought. The other mahjong stuff I've bought at Esty...more wearable stuff but fun.

  11. I agree with you about Netflix. It has so many foreign made films and even I, who loves foreign language films, don't like the tone of most of them. There is also a lot for the young which do nothing for me and comedies that don't appeal to my sense of humor, but that might be just me. As for news, I wish I could give it up. I don't watch news but I read way too much. It only upsets me and you have no idea what is fake anymore. If we are going down the toilet, I guess I'd rather not see it coming any more.

    1. They want to wear us down so we don't watch the news anymore. Then they can really tear the country apart. We just have to pace ourselves for the long haul.

I don't like the tone of foreign films. I'm thinking it's a culture thing, different value system or whatever. Netflix has too many reality shows, too. BUT I heard they are saving Sesame Street and even plan to show it in other countries. You've got to love them for that, if nothing else.

  12. I second the recommendation for the roku from your other reader. When our local cable company started charging $15 for a cable box per tv, it spurred me into exploring other options for the tv in my bedroom and kitchen. I will admit I was not the one who hooked them up (although I understand it isn't hard) but they do sync with each other so I can watch a show on an app in my kitchen and move to the bedroom to fold clothes and pick up where I was.
My current recommendations are Amanda Raisin on Amazon (if you want something light), New Tricks on Amazon which is a crime drama that isn't too gritty, and free programing on the Roku like The Great British Baking Show or whatever else they recommend when I turn it on, lol. I'm trying (other than Rachel on Monday and the Daily Show, Jimmy Kimmel and Steve Cobert) to avoid news shows. I am upset enough already.

    1. Thanks for the recommendations. So many people love the Great British Baking Show I really need to try it sometime. I don't generally like those kinds of shows but you never know.

My Liberal Ladies group is really addicted to Rachel on Monday. I watch highlights from the Daily Show snd Steven Cobert on Facebook.

    2. I am also on Team Roku. I picked one up a couple of years ago and really like it. I can watch old tv series (first couple seasons of Cheers really holds up) and a fair number of movies. I had never seen The Best Years of Our Lives despite it being called the best war movie ever and saw it for free on Roku. Another show I love is The Kominsky Method, made for our age group and pretty funny, but maybe I love it because Alan Arkin is in it. I have had Netflix for years but might let it go for the same reason others have mentioned - too many odd foreign movies. I like foreign movies generally but have been turned off by what they are showing.

    3. It finally dawned on me that the hook up I have in the bedroom is a Roku. I get their line up monthly on my computer for what's coming up but don't open it. I need to change that! I love Alan Arkin, too, and will check out the Kominsky Method. In general I don't like movies made for our age bracket like The Inside Man and that's why I've been avoiding The Kominsky Method.

  13. Although I have the ability to watch movies via Amazon or YouTube, I mostly don't. There are some great things out there that tickle my fancy, though: primarily documentaries. I just finished watching Muscle Shoals and thoroughly enjoyed it ($2.99/Youtube, $3.99/Amazon). Just before that, I watched the entire Black and White Night tribute concert with Roy Orbison, and enjoyed that one so much I went ahead and bought the DVD. When all the streaming platforms destroy one another, I'll still have it!

    1. There is something about paying to watch stuff on Amazon that I've been resisting. I pay for prime and audio already and the one time I did start watching an old series I loved, half way through it they wanted me to pay $29 to see the rest and I wouldn't do it. It's so much harder to find our viewing than in the old days but it seems like we all have found our niches.

  15. I agree with you about the choice of Pope. To have an American as Pope, and one who is anti-MAGA is exactly what is needed. I hope the tide is turning and the world is waking up to the threat (nay, reality) of fascism rearing its ugly head once again. The extreme right is taking a beating in recent elections world-wide, and I couldn't be happier!

  16. I love the new Pope so far, and really love that he is calling out the MAGA Catholics on their hypocrisy -- especially one of my Christianist brothers and his annoying wife. She alternately posts religious things and promotions for her MLM sales. Blech.

My hairdresser told me to watch Ransom Canyon, so i watched a couple episodes. It's OK, and I think it appeals to those who love cowboys, so maybe you would like it? The main cowboy is really a looker. LOL. Otherwise, we pay for PBS Passport and love a lot of what they offer, especially the British crime procedurals. Right now we're watching the last season of Bosch on Amazon, which has commercials because I refuse to pay for the ad-free version. For what Amazon Prime costs, we should have free access to the streaming stuff. Grrr.

    1. I felt the same way you do about Ransom Canyon...okay but looks alone couldn't hook me to watching.

I love the new pope!!! I hope he keeps it up and we get t watch the hypocrite spin themselves crazy trying to bad mouth him for living up to the teachings of the church.

  17. We have nothing but basic cable. The only movies we watch are Hallmark or Lifetime. For us it works. Sometimes I will watch a movie on my iPad but not often. I like Blue Bloods for the family dynamics, enjoyed the new Madlock show, and other law enforcement shows. We basically watch the same things over and over. I usually retreat into a good book rather than watch TV.
I appreciate that the Catholic Church has once again voted in a Pope who is not afraid to stand up to Trump and his band of Indians. How can one call themselves Christians and abide with a man who basically has no morals? His life has been a testament of lies, immorality, and the list could go on forever. If we make it through these next 3 1/3 years I hope that those who put him into office have a big change of heart. God help us. JJ

Hallmark has a lot of feel good movies and sometimes that's exactly what I need and will binge them for a while then go back to gritter things. Call me crazy but I also like their Christmas in July Hallmarks.

We are in complete agreement on the 45/47 and our hopes for the future.
