That department has been around since 1867 which was founded to gather facts and statistics on the state of illiteracy, etc, of Americans. Fast forward to 1917 when illiteracy was deemed to be a national crisis because according the Smith-Hughes Vocation Education Act "widespread illiteracy, especially among the waves of immigrants made them susceptible to the incipient anarchist and communist movements." Another landmark act passed by Congress based on statistics gathered by the Department of Education is one that effected everyone in my generation. That was the 1946 School Lunch Act “to safeguard the health and well-being of the Nation’s children.” It was spearheaded by the generals in our Armed Services who were worried about our military readiness with the thread of Russia's (at the time) head-start in the space race breathing down their necks. Why? Because during WWII a shocking number of boys couldn't serve because of diet related diseases. One of my earliest memories is of being in school on the day when we lined up behind a farmer's truck and he passed out apples and the teachers gave up boxes of raisins and milk. There was a cameraman involved as well. We'll be right back to where we started if education is turned over to the States because it would be a nightmare for military or corporate recruiters to have to deal with 52 different standards to graduate high school and college. Like it or not, our country needs a core of educational standards in common for all its citizens.
Another thing fighting my Christmas spirit right now is the fact that the Austin School board just ruled 7-1 to allow Bible-infused teachings in their elementary schools. They say the new curriculum is optional but the public schools that use it will get more money from the state of Texas if they do. Well, they're going to need the extra money because lawsuits are sure to follow over that pesky First Amendment issue in the Constitutional that has always kept government entities from establishing a State sponsored religion. In the past we could be sure that lawsuits would keep certain over-reaching Christians denominations in check but with the current Supreme Court we can't be sure they will follow the constitution. As per the Project 2025 agenda several states are also currently passing laws to allow the Ten Commandments in their public schools with the hope that the current high court will overturn the 1980 ruling that tested and failed on this is very topic. The new twist this time around is that they are calling the Ten Commandments part of American's history.
Some people might wonder why I care about issues like this when I don't have kids or grandkids and I didn't work in the field of education not to mention I'm old by anyone's standards. I care that little kids don't have to go through what I went through in grade school with an over zealous teacher who slapped me many times a day with a ruler with the Golden Rule printed on it. This teacher also sent religious tracts home with me not because I presumably didn't repent the sin of turning my paper in a certain direction before I wrote on it. (All us left handers did it "wrong".) The tracts went home with just a few of us kids whose parents didn't go to church and often she'd send me off with whispered words of about telling my parents to repent their sins before it was too late. Religion does not belong in public schools!
I, of course, didn't know it at the time but a few years before my semester of ruler slappings a teacher beat a student death over him not reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. A handful of court cases were brought against school boards across the country after that and in all of the cases it was ruled against a student's First Amendment Rights to force them to say the pledge in school. Why? Because some religions forbidden the worship of anything or anyone but God. And the First Amendment is what keeps that Pledge of Allegiance out of our public schools today. But for how long?
How much money on both sides will be wasted on lawsuits and lawyers over the coming 45/47 administration proposed changes? The environment, woman's rights, education, our health care---everything will be under attack. Now Musk, RFK jr with their newly appointed comrade, Marjorie Taylor Green, are saying one of the first things they are going work on is how to defund Planned Parenthood. 70% of their funding comes for Medicaid reimbursements for services to low income people, the rest from private donations. None of their government funding is used for abortion services and yet that isn't good enough. With so many doctors not accepting Medicaid patients where are poor people go for their gynecology needs including birth control, UTI treatments and their cancer, HIV and STD screening for both sexes?
I don't have an off ramp to this post so I'll just wish you all a good Thanksgivings surrounded by family and lots of good food. I'll be staying here for the CCC's buffet which will include:

Until Next Wednesday when I'll be writing about all the holiday choices for entertainment offered around here. ©
I hope you can enjoy your Thanksgiving in spite of the scary things about to happen.
ReplyDeleteI will. A couple of days ago six of us sat at the lunch table long after the table was cleared and other dinners had gone and all we did is laugh over silly things. I just need an outlet to write about stuff I can't talk about with most people. here.
DeleteI think you mean RFK Jr. but yes, agree totally. It's a mess. Even if things don't all go through, enough will, with no checks and balances. I have no words. But I'm also having a few spirit issues this season. Your menu sounds good. Rick will be gone and I will be enjoying a home-alone Thanksgiving so I bought my favorite crap food that I never eat! And maybe, I'll get up a tree!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the correction..and before too many people saw my mistake. We have a great chef now. She just won an Iron Chef Contest over nine others across four states. It's been going all year with all the chefs going on location once a month for nine different types of food. Today she's serving the final dish she won with. So I can't wait and it's only 9 in the morning.
DeleteI'm having a hard time getting in the holiday spirit, too. Last week, our little grand daughters got sick, but bounced back to normal in a few days. Hubby and I, on the other hand, are still battling upper respiratory junk, fever and coughing. When I think about the many wonderful Thanksgivings from the past, though, I am grateful. My mom was a great cook and we ate like kings and queens. I think your menu looks good for tomorrow, Jean. Just think--you don't have to prepare food and you don't have to clean up. Girl, that's enough to get you in the holiday spirit, lol. Happy Thanksgiving Jean!
ReplyDeleteI know! No clean up is a real blessing. The only trouble is there are no left overs for turkey sandwiches.
DeleteThere's a lot of respiratory junk and coughing going on around here, too. I hope you feel better soon.
I'm sorry you had such a rough time with teachers when you were young. Frump's gang will make a mess of things for sure.
ReplyDeleteWith Thanksgiving tomorrow, I'm thinking about all of the things I can be thankful for (and I realize I am so lucky to have a lot to be thankful for)! I am thankful for your blog, Jean, because you tell it like it is and share so many wonderful stories and real facts and thoughts with us. xo
The other half of the school sorry is that at the end of the semester when that teacher gave me a failing grade for penmanship my mom went to the principal and showed him a sample of my handwriting done with my paper turned the way I wanted it ( and it came out what she was doing with the left-handers that teacher wasn't back the next year. I had great hand writing when I was young and none of my other teachers before her had given me anything less than a B.
DeleteP.S. I'm thankful to you and the others who follow my blog. I can't believe in the last few days I've turned over to the 2,000,000 unique views. I thought it would happen next week, not this week, and I'd write about it but this post then. But this post got 1,087 views over night which is unusual for me the first day!
DeleteI'm sorry to read that you are having trouble getting into the holiday spirit Jean, but I would be surprised if you weren't having trouble...given the news I am reading about your incoming administration. I wonder if those that voted for Trump are secretly starting to worry just a little bit about letting lunatics run the asylum.
ReplyDeleteDeb
One 45/47 supporter here said she hasn't watched the news since the election because she knows we're in good hands. That's the mindset that got us into this mess is all the people refuse to watch the news for one reason or another. They voted for a party that no longer exists, trusting all will go well.
DeleteHi , I'm from Texas and when you said the Austin school board approved the Bible teaching, I wanted to say it was the Texas board of education and the vote was narrow, 8 to 7. It wouldn't have passed except for the Democrat who was running for a house seat was replaced by our depressing governor who appointed a person who he knew would vote his way.
ReplyDeleteWe're here fighting the good fight in Texas. Don't count us out yet.
I wondered about how the Austin schools could get money from the state if they used the Bible teachings. Now I get it, I think, the state board of education passed it and now local school boards are voting to implement it. I have no doubt there are Texans and others all over the country ready and willing to fight against the challenges against our constitution. It just makes me mad we have to spent time and money---again---on these sort of thing.
DeleteFrom The TexasTribune:
Delete"Americans United for Separation of Church and State said in a statement that “Texas’ new Bible-infused elementary curriculum is part of the nationwide effort by Christian Nationalists to impose their religious beliefs on public school students.” The Texas American Federation of Teachers blasted the state for infusing school lessons with “Bible-based references more appropriate for Sunday Schools than public schools.”
“We can anticipate what will come next, whether that’s the erasure of contributions of marginalized populations in social studies or the minimization of climate change in science,” the union said."
And so it begins. I used to belong to the Americans United for Separation of Church and State. I may have to join again. Thanks for sharing.
DeleteOf course we need more actors and actresses in government! He probably thinks that's how HE got elected.
ReplyDeleteAnd he is an actor...never tells the truth.
DeleteI’m just glad I’m old.. grateful for the time frame I was born in (1947). The worst is yet to come, thanks to all these fools. We are a living witness to the end of an era, which will be replaced by much darker times. Enjoy the meal and a glass of wine. That’s what I plan on doing. Mary
ReplyDeleteTotally agree on being grateful for the time frame we were born in. We will usher out the end of a great era of accomplishments that are about to be destroyed.
DeleteWow! Your experience in elementary school is wild. But I suppose not surprising given this area. Sheesh. The nuns have nothing on that. LOL.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying hard to remain as calm as possible. And I'm off to the family T'giving gathering hoping against hope that politics doesn't come up. I don't think anyone wants to start it because there are a couple of the guests who "might" have voted for Trump. I'm hopeful they learned their lesson in 2016 given recent comments, but one can never be sure.
I just finished having thanksgiving dinner with two known 45/47 fans and I lived to tell about it. No one brought up politics, thankfully. Have a great day!
DeleteI'm so curious -- what dish did your Iron Chef contestant come up with? I'll bet it was good, whatever it was. I joined some friends and we did a sort-of-non-traditional meal: ribs, brisket, coleslaw, fruit salad, broccoli-rice casserole, pumpkin pie, and peach cobbler. Actually, that's a pretty traditional Texas meal -- it just doesn't usually land on the Thanksgiving table. It was fun, and on top of everything else we turned cold enough to feel like Thanksgiving: strong wind and temperatures in the 50s. That surely wouldn't qualify as bone-chilling for most of you up there, I suppose, but we all were looking for our jackets.
ReplyDeleteI hope your day was a good one!
The way the last round of the Iron Chef contest went, the nine chefs had to draw the name of a country out of a bowl, then go to the store as a group and then cook a dish from the country they drew out of the bowl. Our chef cooked Asian fried chicken and she served it last night. It was great, more sweet than spicy. I'm really afraid that someone is going to try to steal her away from us having won a nine round contest like that.
DeleteI would love Texas style ribs for any meal including Thanksgiving. The peach cobbler sounds great too. My day and meal was pretty good, thanks!
Your concerns are mirrored by many of us who remember what it used to be like before certain protections and Rights were put into place for everyone. We are going backwards with the new Administration, to practices that discriminate and punish depending on if they view you as an "Undesirable" or not "American Enough". It's gonna be a big grift, bigger than last time and who scares me more is Elon, since, unlike 45/47 who is a Moron and easily manipulated, he's very Intelligent and Transactional and has a lot to gain by grooming himself as "replacement" for an Old Man he sees as someone who won't last long and will need replacing by somebody. A lot of the Inner Circle now concerns me more than the Orange Lunatic, they are seizing opportunities he's providing them helter skelter and positioning themselves to take over. At least your Thanksgiving Spread was pretty impressive my Friend, try to Center yourself to enjoy the Holidays and not fixate on what is ahead, we will have all of 2025 and beyond to Deal with all that. And, we shall be part of the Resistance.
ReplyDeleteGood advice you give there, Dawn, and I'm taking it. But not before saying that I agree with what you're saying about Elon.
DeleteTeaching comparative religions is a good way to learn critical thinking skills, but honing in on any one religion, forcing it onto everyone, isn't going to help anyone except the people who make money off that particular religion.
ReplyDeleteI took comparative religion in college and it was a great course---well balanced but that's not what they are talking about. They want to use Bible lessons in grade school classes and that will only help the lawyers on both side make money arguing the separation of state and religion.
DeleteI really like this post. It is so important to speak out and not ignore the coming tide of horror we can expect -- already in play, actually. I'm so glad I joined my local Indivisible group. I feel supported and we will have a plan for action to push back as we can within our current system, which still exists and we will fight legally and peaceably to keep democracy while the levers of government grind to a virtual halt in the next 4 years. Perhaps in two years we can win back the Congress. That is the goal. 45/47 sent out a social media message wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, including the "Radical Left Lunatics". (Good name for a band!) And then went on to promise he won't let us continue to work to destroy our country. I guess millions agree with him. And I know, too, that millions don't -- our Radical Left Lunatic club knows he barely won. He doesn't have a mandate. And we are not going anywhere.
ReplyDeleteI saw that message from 45/47 and was shocked by his nastiness---I know, you'd think by now nothing he does should shock me. He's not going to let go of his vindictiveness. I have been seeing stuff about the Indivisible Michigan and been wondering if it would be worth joining. Thanks for reminding me to look into it.
DeleteThat hateful thanksgiving message issued by the same person who played Ave Maria at his rallies….a beautiful hymn honoring the mother of Jesus whose eternal message is “love another”
DeleteHe is such an ass!
