Have you ever noticed how many creams and lotions come with old age? I just had an appointment with my foot doctor to get---I thought---some custom-made shoe inserts. I've had them many times over my life but not in the last 6-7 years and lately I've felt like I am walking on a bed of marbles. But it turns out custom-made inserts, now, sell for $499 and the doctor said no insurance company will pay for them. Instead, she sold me some inserts you can only buy from foot doctor's offices and for $45.00. Best money I've spent in a long time. She also told me to get some Diclofenac Sodium topical gel to put on my feet twice a day (for pain relief) because I have so much arthritis, especially in one foot where I broke a lot of bones back in my 40s. I don't know why I put off going into see her for so long. These two little tweaks have made a big difference.
The addition of one more cream to apply to my body got me looking around to see how many others I've added in this past year. There's the Asutra Melt Pain Away Body Butter I use at night for restless legs that was recommended at a lecture about the holistic approach to getting a better night's sleep. And the Biotene Dry Mouth Moisturizing Gel the dentist just this month recommended that I'm to put on my tongue following the use of a tongue scraper. Dry mouth can keep me from falling back to sleep when I get up to pee. (I'm not a good sleeper.) I have deep groves in the surface of my tongue and the dentist said a tongue scraper prevents bacteria from building up down in the groves and causing sores that act up when dry. (The dryness comes from being a mouth breather at night.) I've tried Biolene spray in the past but it never lasted all night like the gel does.
If it seems like I over-dose on moisturizers it's because my pedicurist and dermatologist harp on me, scold me and lecture me about my dry skin. They all but hold me down and lather me up with oils but come to think of it, my pedicurist does do exactly that. And speaking of her, she is responsible for me adding Tea Tree Oil to my "products." I started out using it on a toenail fungus that is finally gone but now I also use it on a fungus-based rash that comes and goes on my stomach and has been for over fifty years. It works as good if not better than all the creams and powers that various skin doctors have prescribed over the decades. Foot power for athletics feet, baby power and prescription creams are also in my arsenal of products for the damn itchy rash, depending on what phase it's in. During hot summer days its at its worst. The smell of Tea Tree Oil is over whelming when I open the drawer where I keep the closed bottle. I can only image what I smell like with products in various combinations all over my freshly bathed body.
The top two drawers in the photo to the left is where most of the Aveeno and Burt's products are and next photo below shows the bottom drawer where I keep the rest of my cosmetics... mostly eye brow stuff. I'm in love with the Gimme Brow+ and the eye brow glue. I have one brown brow and one mostly gray brow and the Gimme Brow+ does a nice job evening them out. The eye brow glue keeps those long hairs from going 'cave dweller' on me. No matter how often I trim them they seem to grow like weeds.
Anyway, I've told you all my vanity and medicine cabinet secrets. Believe it or not, I check the expiration dates on everything in my medicine cabinet (photoed up above) every fall so all that stuff in there is still good even though much of it is there 'just in case I need it.' Is anyone still reading this post? I'm guessing I lost a few readers half way through.
Until Next Wednesday.
I read to the end! Andy's the only one who has things in our medicine cabinet, and it's not very crowded. I have hand lotion on my dresser and some tree tea oil foot cream in drawer, etc. Interesting topic. :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't know they make tea tree oil in a cream form. That would be so much easier to control where it goes than the liquid that comes with an eye dropper that I have!. Thank you for sharing that!
DeleteOh thank you for sharing! I feel like half my day is putting on lotions and potions and trying to get good sleep. I have my semi annual wellness check in May so I've been keeping a list.
ReplyDeleteI take 5 mg Ambien every night ... and once or twice a month I take an extra one. I think I may try the Benedryl for when I wake up at 3am and can't get back to sleep. Cerave brand has been my latest regime but I may be changing based on my four facials. The young aesthetician (25?) is very holistic so I'm gonna switch when I use up my other stuff ... Lotion with retinol, lotion with Vit C, night time eye cream that I use morning and night. Healing ointment on my lips and in my nose. Body butter after every shower.
It's a lot of work this aging stuff!
Boy, be careful taking a sleep med when you wake up in the middle of the night! Really easy to overdose if you forget that you took one earlier at bedtime.
DeleteI'm really careless about remembering to use the creams and lotions I buy and half of them turn bad before I use them up. But I do need them. You are my role model in this department.
Your display of “things” look very familiar to how my drawers look. Every so often I hear of a new product or someone suggests what works for them and off I go to get the miracle cream or drug only to have it outdated itself in the drawer. I too have battled very dry skin for years and even though I have tried many things it’s still there. I have arthritis in the top of my feet and they hurt most of the time. I have arthritis in my back that rears it’s ugly head often, especially after a fall like I had a couple of weeks ago. So my cupboards and drawers are loaded with all kinds of self-help items to meet any need that might arise. Oh the joy of getting old and this getting old is not for sissies. Hopefully we all find that miracle cream or drug that makes these years golden.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, dry skin comes from within and no amount of lotions and creams can really cure it. But I guess the name of the game isn't to cure it so much as control it so we're not flaking off all over the place. LOL
DeleteI do like the arthritis cream and think it helps but I serious worry about how we all smell with our potions and lotions mixed together. I remember all the old people jokes and young people remarking about how old people smell different and now I know why.
Hi Jean! I read the whole thing because I'm glad I'm not the only one who has collected tons of products and medications. Usually, it's hard for me to throw things out. After all, in the event of the apocalypse, we might not be able to get medications, and that 10-yr-old scrip from the oral surgeon might be helpful. Scary, but I do have those conversations with myself. Once in awhile, when I'm in the right mindset, I can clear the debris. Lately, I've been using much less makeup, and I tossed lots of stuff away. Society has done a number on us gals, and often we think we have to put on a full face of makeup in order to leave the house. I'm scaling back and my skin seems to like that. Hope you're having a good week, Jean.
ReplyDeleteI gave up on make up except for lip gloss and eyebrow stuff at least a decade ago. But a lot of my fellow residents still wear it and way to much of it. It can get clownish looking, I think because older women tend to wear the same colors they always wore and our skin tones change as we age. Women are sold a bill of goods that makes us want to look like we're air brushed for a magazine shoot. I don't get why young women are still buying into that.
DeleteJean, the above "anonymous" is from Pam. I don't know why my name isn't showing. Oh well...
DeleteI'm glad to hear you monitor your cupboard for expiration dates. I wouldn't be without -face cream w/ sunscreen, tweezers for all those chin hairs; eyebrow pencil to fill in the thinning brows; hand lotion; lip balm; ibuprofen for aches & pains. There is a stock of cold remedy products (cough syrup, decongestant, etc.) that usually outdate between uses. So far so good with Rx meds; only a histamine for the occasional BPPV. Yes, this aging process can keep us busy.
ReplyDeleteYa, I throw out more cold and flu products than I use but I always buy new ones every fall because I don't want to be on the roads in the winter while I'm sick. I have no one else to run and grab them if needed.
DeleteI'm laughing out loud! So many products that I don't know about. I used to use Aveeno products but moved on to Neutrogena and CeraVe. I have some Burt's Bees lip balms, love the Vanilla Bean one. I have a lovely collection of sunblocks from various places. That's where I'm inclined to try any and all brands.
ReplyDeleteI'm the opposite regarding sun blockers. I have to be nagged to put them on. I used to be a Neurogena 'girl' but don't remember why I changed. Probably because of those Jennifer Anderson commercials and the fact that my husband had a crush on her.
DeleteI am coming back to your post with a paper and pencil to take some notes on products! I am also very interesting in your experience with the "falling" app. I am a faller. Actually I had my medicare checkup right after the fall where I broke my nose. When she asked the question I answered yes and mentioned the other two more recent falls. Her response was "okay" and she moved on. I didn't even get a black mark. I just finished some PT which I think was helping with balance and lifting my left leg more (maybe) but as soon as the sessions ended I was hit with bad sciatica in the left leg and haven't followed up with exercises at home.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
They haven't started the individual testing with app yet but I'll be sure to write about it when they do. I don't fall often but when I do I usually break a bone---both elbows, a wrist, an arm, ribs, toes and my foot. I never get dizzy but my feet have always been bad which makes walking touchier.
DeleteGoodness, that is a lot to keep track of. I sometimes think that creams and lotions purposely make our skin drier so we have to keep using more creams and lotions! I'm pretty lazy when it comes to using them and I don't use any makeup at all. Glad you can keep track of what works for you, Jean.
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't surprise me if your theory about lotions drying out our skin is correct!
DeleteI've got a ton of the same products but don't have room for them in the bathroom cabinet. I have a boatload of products in little baskets and plastic containers. Nothing I've tried helps alleviate my dry itchy skin, not even the skin stuff the doctor prescribed, so I'm going to try that tea tree mixed with lotion thing.
ReplyDeleteWhat I use it on is a rash that gets raw and itchy. It's not dry skin. The rash comes from a fungus that comes and goes.
DeleteI may have deleted my comment, or this may be a duplicate. I have always had very dry, sensitive skin, so I am careful with products and don't hesitate to toss anything that my skin doesn't like. I really like Avenno products, used to use Neutrogena and others but now use Aveeno more than anything else (except in the winter, when I prefer Vanicream, a thicker cream).
DeleteNina
Nope, not a duplicate. Never heard of Vanicream but there are so many products out there that I'm not surprised. I think Avenno has more effective commercials that Neutrogena. LOL
DeleteI have a big new bottle of Aveeno now that spring is here and there is more moisture in the air. I have been experimenting with something called BioOil that I learned about after a skin cancer removal. I had leftovers, so all winter I have been putting a few drops on my palm, then dispensing whatever lotion I am using. It makes a big difference! I am still using is now but it will become too much when summer gets here.
DeleteNina
Just googled BioOil. It looks interesting.
DeleteInteresting how we all get drier as we age. I also have a ton of lotions and creams, and some help more than others. As for meds, I have to go through and throw them out regularly as they expire. Sometimes I keep them "just in case" because how bad could they be -- especially in a pinch. I got really sick on an overseas trip once and you really can't buy effective cold meds in a French pharmacy. So now I travel with the "big guns". That said, I caught a nasty bug on my recent trip to the UK to see my daughter and her family. When I got home, I took the strongest decongestant I know (Mucinex D) which promptly sent me into Afib. So I guess that expensive package will be discarded. The meds that are OK with heart rhythm issues are not all that helpful. :-(
ReplyDeleteAnyway...it's good to know we're not alone. The medicine cabinet runneth over.
An infection itself can easily send you into Afib, if you have heart rhythm issues. All the men in my husband's family have/had that condition. My mom had it too. Scary.
DeleteNot fun to get sick when traveling!!!
I take Benadryl every day and it has almost completely alleviated my rashes. However, what it is doing to other parts of my body will be revealed in the near future. Seems like the cure for one problem is the cause of another.
ReplyDeleteIt do doesn't. I am like a zombie when I take Benadryl and I can't function normally when I'm on it. And I've been on it for extended lengths of time because of hives.
DeleteWow! That is a LOT of stuff. I'm trying to get better about moisturizing, but I really hate the time it takes to lotion up after my shower. AND avoid my cats, both of whom seem to think this is the ideal time to cuddle around my legs and rub up against me. Yuck.
ReplyDeleteI am very good about keeping my face and neck and decolletage moisturized. I'll fight those wrinkles, for sure.
The cats probably want to get some of that lotion on them, thinking it's your scent, like they are rubbing their scent on you.
DeleteWe need to start a movement that re-brands wrinkles as marks of
intelligence or something cool.
I have NEVER heard of eyebrow glue. Hmmm. I must be lotion-defective. I do have a facial moisturizer I use sometimes, and suntan lotion with spf. And a hand cream and an excellent foot cream. And I think that's it. (Well, neosporin and cortisone 10 plus). A few weeks ago I cleaned out the medicine cabinet and threw it all away and just saved things not expired. Trader Joe has great tea tree oil shampoo/conditioner/body wash products. They DO smell good!
ReplyDeleteI thought it was funny, too---the eyebrow glue but it does keep those stray eyebrow hairs in line. I found it at Meijer a few months ago when I was looking for something else and bought it on a whim.
DeleteI am learning a lot about tea tree oil in these post comments. Got to check out Trader Joes.
I don't have that much, in my bathroom cabinet we have toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, comb, body spray and deodorant. On my dressing table, i face moisturiser, foundation, face powder, deodorant, body spray, body moisturiser for my chest and arms. I also have eyeshadows and lipsticks and lip gloss and jewellery.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness. I have two lotions (Lubriderm daily and Olay complete, both fragrance free), four lipsticks, a loose powder I never use, and a very few over-the-counter medications: Benadryl for fire ant or other insect bites, Refresh tears for windy days or long computer sessions, and Neosporin. Looking around, I did find some Tylenol and Ibuprofen that I never use. Both expired in 2021! Of course, there's the usual collection of toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, hair brushes, and etc., but that's about it.
ReplyDeleteThe actual vanity holds nothing but soap in a metal leaf-shaped dish, toothbrush etc., four Art Deco tiles from a Berkeley pottery, and a body spray I love from V'tae called "Seashell" that's very much like the old 4711 -- very refreshing in our heat. Apparently it's not available any longer, but I still have two bottles to use until it's time to find a different product.
I wish I could be you right now. Think of the money I'd save. LOL
DeleteI find I'm becoming more minimalist as I get older, when it comes to my medicine cabinet. I use rose hip seed oil as my moisturizer and I use Pear's soap to glue down my eyebrow hairs - just wet the bar and run a spoolie through it and then brush my eyebrows with the spoolie - it works really great. Now if only I could find a cheaper alternative to the mineral sunscreen I love (Elta MD)....
ReplyDeleteDeb
You live a healthier life style than me with all your hikes and good diet, so I can see why you can do with less products and meds. I also have a long history of hives, welts and rashes from environmental things so I have to be prepared.
DeleteI never would have thought about soap to glue down eyebrow hairs but I do love doing it with whatever product works. I'm afraid to go into one of those places that specialize in eyebrows where they claim they can tame the course, woolly eyebrows.
I was diagnosed a couple of years ago with eczema after a very itchy rash on my foot that would not go away after 6 months of prescription steroids (dermatologist finally did a biopsy). There are some very effective over-the-counter products for eczema, my favorite is Gold Bond Eczema Relief with 2% colloidal oatmeal. What is colloidal oatmeal, you ask? Or at least, I did. It's finely ground oatmeal. That's the active ingredient. I figured, since oatmeal baths are an old-time solution for poison ivy, among other things, it could work. I have been delighted with how well it works. I have always been an itchy person, but now if I put this on an itch, it stops itching. I still have to use it regularly on my foot, and several other places, or the eczema comes back, but I can do that. Since my stroke, I've given up makeup of any kind, and since I live in Florida, dry skin isn't really a problem so I don't use any other lotions. As for sleep, Florida has medical marijuana, and that's what I use to help me sleep. It works well, and I always wake up feeling great. Well, as good as I can, anyway.
ReplyDeleteI used to have to take oatmeal baths for my hives. Thank you for the tip on Gold Bond Eczema Relief. I'll bet that will work on my reoccurring rash. I have a newest dermatologist that has never seen my rash and its never been biopsied.
DeleteWe have medical marijuana here in Michigan too but I'm afraid to try it for fear I'll be allergic to it.
We only have a Medicine Cabinet in the Guest Bathroom and it has what the younger Two Generations use in it. I mostly have good quality Skin Care Products in my under the Sink Bathroom Cabinet. We keep non prescription meds in a wicker Basket for everyone to use. I only take the Rx Meds for Diabetes... Dawn the Bohemian
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised that after your stroke you only have the meds for diabetes.
DeleteYeah, they didn't add any Meds, which was okay by me. I think some of the Diabetic Rx is to help prevent Strokes and Heart Attacks anyway.
