Welcome to the Misadventures of Widowhood blog!

Welcome to my World---Woman, widow, senior citizen seeking to live out my days with a sense of whimsy as I search for inner peace and friendships. Jeez, that sounds like a profile on a dating app and I have zero interest in them, having lost my soul mate of 42 years. Life was good until it wasn't when my husband had a massive stroke and I spent the next 12 1/2 years as his caregiver. This blog has documented the pain and heartache of loss, my dark humor, my sweetest memories and, yes, even my pity parties and finally, moving past it all. And now I’m ready for a new start, in a new location---a continuum care campus in West Michigan, U.S.A. Some people say I have a quirky sense of humor that shows up from time to time in this blog. Others say I make some keen observations about life and growing older. Stick around, read a while. I'm sure we'll have things in common. Your comments are welcome and encouraged. Jean

Crafts and other Obsessions

It’s been awhile since I shared the crafts and other stuff taking up my leisure time. I’ll start with the oil painting to the left. It’s one I did in the class they have here on campus. It’s a class mostly for people who haven’t painted in the past and it only costs $10 including the stretched canvas, oil paints and all the other supplies. I should probably not be signing up for these classes because there are only six spaces open and I’m not really a beginner which the classes are geared for. But it's the only game in town, so to speak, so I go and accept the fact that the instructor doe not allow anyone to pick out their own subject matter, colors or brush strokes. She teaches in a formula style and this painting took up four afternoons (twelve hours) of my life.

I was having dinner with The Art Professor and my neighbor, who still curators and rotates art for a foundation's purchases---we're talking paintings worth big bucks---and they were asking about the class. When the professor found we start out tracing the composition and the process that follows blab, blab, blab she said, “That’s outrageous, she’s killing creativity!” So I asked her, “How would you teach a group of seniors who’ve mostly never held a brush before? It’s not like anyone is interested in setting up a still-life and practicing drawing, composition and color theory a semester before being allowed to take a painting class. Everyone leaves with a painting they think is ‘real art’ and they are happy. It’s entertainment, not art. Like the sip-and-paint parties for wedding showers.” My neighbor could see the point I was making, the professor did not. (She taught three dimensional art, by the way, and judging by the sculpture by her apartment door she could handle a welding torch with the best of them.)

After the class ending I started and finished a paint-by-number canvas that is to the right. I first one I've done since I was a kid and I thought doing this bouquet of flowers helped me with relearning how to control the paint flowing off my brushes. And it was fun. Then I discovered that you can get photographs turned into paint-by-number kits. So I ordered two of them. The first photo below is one what I sent to the company and the second photo is the completed paint-by-number generated from my photo. From a distance it looks pretty good but up close it looks digitalized---which it is, of course and I'd love to see the machine that does it.

Slightly off topic but when I was downsizing I had 4-5 vintage paint-by-numbers that I sold on e-Bay for $40 to $60---worth the effort to put them up for sale. Apparently, the mid-century modern trend in decorating and collecting brought back an interest in those silly, crafty pieces of 'art' and I like to imagine one of those old paint-by-numbers I did in the '50s found its way onto the walls of a trendy gay couple's apartment.

The next photos show my second customized, paint-by-number project and when I’m finished with it I will (hopefully) be ready to fix the face on a portrait I was working on when my husband had his stroke. It’s an important goal for me and as my hand gets less shaky my confidence grows. By the way, I bought the kits from Amazon from a company named CBCBBEAU and they cost $17.99. Working on the paint-by-numbers, for me, is like a meditation session. You have no choice but to live in the moment. If paint-by-numbers is all I end up doing for the rest of my life I could live with that.

The second photo I sent the company.

What comes in the kit.

The color palette.

The canvas that you have to stretch yourself before you begin.

My other obsession that is eating up way mega time is I joined the “I Love Mahj” website where I’m playing Mahjong against computer bots. So far I’ve played over 700 games in three weeks and my stats say I'm winning 32% of the time. Don’t freak out over that 700 number; each game averages six to eight minutes long. Our mahjong group here on campus take two hours to play three games. The bots don’t have to think so I'm able to build my skills faster. Last week I won two of our three in-person games and the woman who taught us all and has been playing 35 years won once. I love the game more the more I play it.

I did have occasion to leave my apartment for something other than food. Residents from all three buildings met in our park to see three women dressed like '50s carhop uniforms sing song from the '40s, '50s and '60s. (The park is really a fenced in area so the people in memory care and assisted living can be outside without wandering off.) They told stories about each song and did a great job. As per my usual M.O. at these musical events on campus one of the songs made be burst out crying. Going to Take a Sentimental Journey reminded me of my Mom. She loved to sing and that was one of her favorites. That was the extent of my holiday celebrating because on the 4th I spent the day in first Urgent Care and then they sent me to E.R. Between the two places it took me seven hours to find out I don't have a blood clot. How's that for a creative way to hide out from The Professor? You might remember I told her a lie about having plans for the 4th to get out of going on a road trip with her. I tell her the truth eventually...that I didn't feel capable of driving that far anymore but I guess Karma doesn't care. It paid me back for lying in the first place.

Until next Wednesday...

  1. I'm glad you didn't have a blood clot, but sorry it took so long for them to confirm it! What were the symptoms?

    1. One of my ankles was (and still is) 2 1/2" bigger than the other one. What was confusing to the Urgent Care doctor is that I had no pain with it but he didn't feel comfortable just sending me back home again. They don't have an ultrasound tech and doctor there. So he sent me to ER. Most of my time was spent in the ER waiting room because they take people based on the severity of their injuries and conditions and people coming in on ambulances got priority. Thankfully I brought a book with me.

  2. Paint by numbers got me through the chicken pox; now that your painting has raised that memory, it's also reminded me that I need to get the new shingles shots.

I'm sure glad you don't have a blood clot, but of all the places to spend the 4th, those weren't the best. On the other hand, the personnel might have been glad to have a break from heat stroke and fireworks mishap victims.

Those retro singing groups are beginning to pop up everywhere, even among the young set. One of my favorites is Post-Modern Jukebox, whose schtick is performing modern songs in a retro style. How about this one? Isn't that fun? I love all of the big bands and their famous songs: String of Pearls, Sentimental Journey, In the Moon, Take the A Train. My dad taught me to dance to those songs on Friday evening 'family nights' at the Masonic Lodge. There was a live orchestra (albeit small), and it was wonderful fun.

    1. Your link was exactly the style the women here sang and performed. I didn't know that style was coming back but I should have. I watch a lot of videos of groups tape dancers which were really popular entertainers when I was a kid. They inspired my mom to put me in dance classes.

Don't forget your shingles shot. I got one three years ago so I think I'm good, but I'll be sure to ask the doctor.

  3. I really like all the paintings you showed us. I have never even attempted to paint, so I admire those who are able. Those paint by number paintings actually sound like fun to me--might need to check those out.

Oh gosh, I absolutely love the big band era. My mom was musical and played that type of music on an old fashioned record player. We always sang along. Good memories. Glad to hear that it's back!

Jean, I feel for you spending 7 hrs in Urgent Care and the ER, but I'm glad there was no clot. Such a relief. Hope that the swelling in your ankle resolves itself.

    1. My mom only sang in our kitchen but she really loved to do it and all she had all those big band record with the Andrew Sisters, etc. She would sing and dance. My favorite memories of my mom and hearing that music this week made me so sentimental. One of my biggest shames in life is years later my dad and I were cleaning the basement and we took her records to the dump. (She didn't have a record player anymore.) She didn't speak to us for a week.

My ankle is even bigger today so something is going on. I just read over the notes from the UC and ER and so I'm not worried about a blood clot or a heart issue, but there is still something wrong. Gotta wait until next week to even get into see my doctor's PN.

  4. Oh, goodness! So sorry to learn of your health concern and that it kept you in the medical centers for the holiday. That's never any fun any day of the week.

The teensy spaces on your custom paint-by-numbers would drive me crazy. And do you do all the spaces for one colour at a time, or do you get bored and do a different colour a day, or what?

    1. They tell you to do all the smallest spaces first so I try to stick to that suggestion but I do only one color at a sitting. I start with the most difficult part of the painting and work my way to the easier stuff figuring by then I'd need I'd the brake from the tedious parts.

  5. Nothing like burying the lede! I'm glad you are OK! Karma? Maybe. Maybe not. But glad all is well. I like your paint by number portrait. You know, if the digitized look on the portrait bothers you, in oils it would be easy to blend the shadows and colors so no hard line, especially for you, who has painted before. I love the one of the flowers on the chair. I'm a little bothered by the painting class too. It's one thing to say "If we do it this way, they'll all look pretty much the same" but she should add -- "but if you are feeling adventurous, add your own touches (or whatever) or colors." (To the degree one can do that, given that they provide the colors. Have you ever see the tutorials Jenna of The Painted Kitchen does? She's a wonderful "fun style" artist who usually does tutorials on Friday. They allow a lot of room for your own creativity. Even if one was doing the same project, they would/could all be different.

I like how they package those kits and the idea of doing it from your own photos is really interesting!

    1. I thought about blending the hard edges and it really would be easy. They give you enough paint but I kind of fascinated by how up close they look entirely different than at a distance. The niece I gave this portrait to is crazy about mid-century decor so it fits right in.

I don't think I'll take anymore of the classes on campus after the next one. I kind of feel obligated to take that one because I asked for one on flowers. I have so much paint left over from the paint-by-numbers I am going to do my own paintings, too. I love having the paint mixed and ready to go. Mixing colors has always been my weakest part of the process.

I'll have to check out Jenna. Not sure if I did or not.

  6. You are a talented artist! Those paintings really look terrific.
I am doing flower arranging (silk and dry flowers) for our local historical museum. They sell them to visitors to help fund programs. It's fun and creative and I've never done it before.
Hope they discover what's going on with your legs and it's an easy fix! It seems like it's always something nowadays!

    1. Arranging flowers, now you're talking where my true talent is/was. I'm glad you're having fun with it and it's for a good cause.

I have an appointment tomorrow with my doctor's PA. It's worse today and one of the doctors yesterday mentioned cellulitis so I'm hoping I'll get a round of antibiotics.

  7. My daughter was talking to me about doing paint-by-numbers just yesterday, as a project with my step-granddaughter (here for the summer). I say: yes please! It looks like fun and I love the idea of getting one made from a photograph. A friend of mine back in Ontario does these, and she gifted me with one a couple of years ago...it looks beautiful hung in my house. I love the paintings you are doing. You are miles ahead of me in terms of skill and talent. My brushwork is not great, which is why abstracts appeal to me...LOL! I think paint-by-numbers would help me gain the confidence, as you mentioned. Sorry you had to spend the holiday in the ER, but thankfully no blood clots!

    1. I bought some clip-on magnifying glasses to go over my prescription glasses and that really helps with the staying within the lines and with judging how much paint is on the end of your brush vs the space where you mean to put it. Hope you and your step-daughter have fun with them. It was always a rainy day or too-hot-to-move-around day for me growing up. With the latter I worked outside on the picnic table.

  8. I am so glad I found your blog. I love your attitude and writing style and enjoy hearing about your adventures (not the ER trip - that is no fun). I enjoy my own company and pursuits and I sympathize with your issue with invitations. I like texts and chatting via Facebook messenger, but no, I don't' want to spend hours having coffee. And I bought a new car last year and am perfectly willing to have others drive it, but I am not the chauffer.

    1. I'm glad you are here reading, too. I have really gotten into texting this year both with younger people and people in my peer age group. Who would have ever guessed! I don't often use Facebook messenger if I can help it. I much prefer email. I know, I'm a dinosaur with that one.

I hear you on the new car and letting others drive it. Lots of people here are doing the same...letting their kids chauffer them.

  9. As a person who has always identified as one with "absolutely no artistic ability" I find myself intrigued by your paint by numbers pieces! They look great, and I appreciated the photo of the actual numbered piece you were working on - it made me think, maybe I could do that! Good luck at the medical appointment.

  10. Oh No, I'm glad it wasn't a Blood Clot, but what a fearful way to spend the 4th... or any day for that matter. I like Paint-By-Number Vintage Art and have bought several, they Sell for a pittance and remind me of the past and the fun we had doing those as Kids. I would imagine buying New Old Stock not yet painted is lucrative tho' for a Seller of them, so few probably still exist. As for Art Class, I too thought the Teacher is stifling Creativity, but like you said, it's more Entertaining and practical the way she's Teaching it since most of the Novice Students who know nothing about Art are probably content to leave with something they did that they consider Art. I'd be one of those people actually, since, tho' Artistically inclined, Painting was never my strength... I hate even Painting a Wall, let alone trying to Paint a piece of Art on Canvas. *LOL* I like those Paint by Numbers you can order from any Picture, yes, they look Digital, but, what Fun anyway.

    1. Yup, the paint-by-numbers I did recently took about a month of working a couple of hours each night. So that's not a bad price for the entertainment. And in the recent classes I've taken every is super proud of their paintings (but me but I don't like landscapes much to begin with).

I have not seen any vintage paint-by-number kit but there sure are a lot of new ones around.

    2. The Granddaughter bought some of the new ones but they were quite ambitious and she quickly lost interest. I recall them being simpler, the Vintage ones?

      Delete
    3. I was thinking the same thing. But looking at some of the vintage p-b-n's they don't look like they'd all be easier. When you look at them on Amazon the kits are sorted by age and I've only looked the ones designed for adults.

  11. Love the photo to painting idea...especially the little blond boy. How cute.

I hope you've gotten some help with the swollen ankle! That's not to be fooled with, as I'm sure you know. At least they've ruled out a blood clot, which is a relief.

    1. The PA I saw was very through and explained all the possible causes and it's not going to so simple to track them down. She's starting with a bunch of blood tests which led to me getting an appointment for an ultrasound of my kidneys. Then tests to track down the source of my anemia. Lots of seemingly unrelated issues I've been having could be connected.

The boy in my painting is really smart!

  13. I'm a believer in always having a book with me (but especially for medical appointments!); my Kobo ereader is good for that purpose. I like the idea of using the paint-by-number projects as a way to recover some of your brush handling skills. Mid-century modern design has always appealed to me. My older brother did a bunch of mid-century modern paintings (mostly abstract skylines) in the 1960s that are hanging in various parts of his house. I wouldn't mind adopting one or two of them when he and his wife are ready to downsize.

    1. I'd forgotten about those mid-century abstracts! I did a few back in the early '60s myself. I recently started following a site on Facebook for mid-century fans and and that's bee fun seeing things I'd forgotten about.
