Summer has been busy here in the land of old people living in harmony on a lake where we can't swim or put a boat or canoe in the shallow water. The only time we see a canoe on the water is when students from a near-by college are taking samples as part of a water quality study or when the DNR is trapping and tagging geese or ducks. The latter is stressful because one time they accidentally trapped one of our swans as well and it got injured trying to get out of the wire cage. People with views of the lake had to watch it suffer for days while trying to get it help but because they are mute swans, that supposedly compete with native waterfowl for food, wildlife preservation organizations aren't allowed to help them. We had two pair and now we're down to one pair and their two juvenile off-springs.
I can't believe summer is almost over! It's been so busy around here between lectures, book club, mahjong, music-in-our-park events, various parties on campus and I don't even do the exercise classes. Last night it was a 'Blues and Brews' night and soon we're having a Hoe-Down---whatever that is. Plus I've had a lot of off campus doctor appointments---mostly routine check ups by the various specialists we seem to acquire as we age.
Speaking of which I acquired a hand specialist this summer and by the time this post goes live I will have had surgery on a 'myxiod cyst' on my dominant hand index finger. My dermatologist didn't want to touch it because they have deep roots and it takes an expert not to do nerve damage to get it all out, or so he said. The way it was explained to me is that all the fluid that is normally in the joint of the finger finds it was up to skin level and forms the cyst. It looks awful, can burst and get infected and it can effect the shape of the nail-bed if it's not removed. Typing is no fun either. By the time this post goes live I'll be 12 hours into a 72 hours recovery protocol. That entails doing 50 fist pumps an hour while awake, keeping my surgical arm elevated above my heart and keeping an ice pack in my armpit. I also have to keep it dressed for five days. The biggest problem is going to be wiping myself with my other hand. An 80-something year old habit is hard to break.New topic: I took a card making class here on campus. Not that I wanted to learn how or will even use the three cards I made. I just like being around people who do crafts. It's fun and it brings out my competitive nature as I strive to be the best which is kind of easy to do around here. But when I can't be the best I fangirl the person who is and I try harder the next time a creative project presents itself. I will fit right in when I have to move on down to assisted living or memory care where the activity directors put on their happy faces and help you color or paint or glue pop-cycle sticks together and feel ever so useful when they get you out of your room.
The cards we made didn't take much creativity. It was mostly gluing and cutting paper. My biggest take-away was a fascination with the paper cutter. I have been missing my old paper cutter that I bought back in the 1960s and I didn't know you can buy smaller cutters that don't take up much room and for dirt cheap. Mine was the old school guillotine style that could cut art paper up to two foot wide. After class I typed my way over to Amazon and bought one that will suit my current needs. I'm going to sleep with it under my pillow so my family will know it's important to me, should they have to move me on down the road. My paper cutter was one of the few things I'd
downsized out of my life that I wish I hadn't let go of.
All kidding aside, I think my creative side is coming back and that's because the Life Enrichment Director scheduled a twice a month gathering of people wanting to do handcrafts together. So far, not many of us show up but I've decided that I'll use the time and space for a big project. For a long time I've thought that I have another quilt in me bursting to get out before I died. Yesterday at the 'gathering' I was able to use one of the large tables to plan and cut out quilt pieces. Last night I started hand-piecing them together while binge watching Lost on Netflix.
I loved the first three seasons of Lost---the eclectic cast of characters and the flashbacks to their lives before the plane crash that put them on an island was brilliant writing. But once they got into the time travel stuff it just seemed like the writers were trying too hard to keep the series going and they'd already exhausted all the good stuff in their writers tool boxes. Now that I'm on the sixth (and last season) I want it to end sooner rather than later.
While searching for an image to go with this post I found a review of Lost in The National Catholic Report, of all places. The author of the review---John Dougherty---put a whole new spin on what I've been watching when he called the series 'spiritual' and most of the examples he used I didn't process the same way he did. I could, however, see his point once it was pointed out. His main take-away is worth sharing and it sums up the premise of the series and our lives in general: "Life is mysterious and frightening. We don't have all the answers, and we never will. It seems reasonable to hold ourselves apart, every person for themselves. But if we want to make it through this life at all, the only way is together." If you are a fan of the series his review is well worth reading. ©
Until Next Wednesday.
A new doctor to add? Always have to one up us, eh? I had never heard of such a thing (myxiod cyst) but Dr. Google has informed me. Wicked recovery and thank you for planning ahead.
ReplyDeleteI tried a few seasons of Lost but then wandered off to something that kept my interest longer. Currently rewatching NCIS starting with Season One (I think there are now 25 or more)
My PCP check up is Weds to discuss that wicked osteoporosis medication. They come individual wrapper so hopefully he can hand out samples for newcomers. Besides that, I just don't have as much energy as I used to. Natural choices are EXERCISE (I get enough mental exercise but NO physical exercise), get enough B-12, drink lots of water, cut back on alcohol. All the things we know to do. I take Coenzyme B-Complex daily as well as a multivitamin. The only workout I ever enjoy is water aerobics, especially in Maui. Our City's new recreation center is due to open February. Two pools, organized water aerobic classes and open swim most of the daytime ... and it's just 4 miles from home.
Thanks for blogging. We should each have a "what I streamed that I loved" blog once a year. Movies and TV series.
Oh my God, I'd love it if those of us in the blog community would share what we are binge watching. After the convention is over I'll be looking for something new. I'm not into crime and punishment shows so NCIS is not on my list of possibilities.
DeleteI uses to do water aerobics and there are several pools close by but I know myself well enough to know that the first cold day I wouldn't go and we have a lot of them in Michigan.
Love Lost, but got a bit weary when it went into Si Fi.. but I carried on watching it!
ReplyDeleteI just finished it last night and I was underwhelm by the writing of the last season. The acting was outstanding. I watched an interview of Naveen and the British host said he couldn't keep up with that plot and Naveen, "I was right there and neither could I." In another interview he said he was proud of the first two seasons.
DeleteI know I say this whenever the season changes, but gosh, I can't believe we're running the last few laps of summer. My husband and I don't understand why time seems to go faster now that we're moving so slowly, lol.
ReplyDeleteJean, I sure hope you heal quickly following your surgery. I'm not familiar with myxiod cysts, so I need to do some research. Glad you're able to get it taken care of.
I appreciate the last quote from John Dougherty. If we're honest, life can be very frightening, and often we need the help and support of others to get us through the rough places.
That quote especially spoke to me because I purposely tried not to get close to others here when I moved in. But now I see some of the close friendships others have formed and I'm wistful---not jealous but I can see the advantages that I'm missed.
DeleteI hope your recovery has been uneventful. Your cyst was a medical oddity to me; I'd never heard of such a thing. I probably would have assumed it was some kind of a blister and popped it.
ReplyDeleteYour Lost hottie reminds me a little of Dev Patel, another actor who I find attractive.
I thought it was a blister too and was considering popping it to drain and I'm glad I didn't. That could cause an infection deep in the joint and it would keep coming back. I was there 2 1/2 hours and the actual surgery took a full hour. The surgeon had to scrape the root off the joint bone. And I got 6 stitches. I have another finger where I've had a split nail for over 5 years that won't grow out no matter what I try---patches, products, etc. The surgeon says I have another type of deep cyst at the base of that nail that prevents the nail from getting hard. Not sure if I'll get it treated but I'm happy to finally know why it's like it is. The body sure is interesting.
DeleteI've been thinking about quilting again, too, Jean. I was just looking yesterday to see what fabrics I had left from a quilt I made my middle son years ago. I thought I might use them to make a small quilt for his latest son, Adam, who will be a year in December.
ReplyDeleteHave you watched any of the DNC convention? You can find the texts to some of the speeches online. I especially liked the Obama's speeches. Michelle said, "Hope is making a comeback!"
I've watched both nights of the convention and especially liked, Hillard's and both Obama's speeches and Joe hit it out of the park with no stumbles. Unfortunately the people who need to hear what a decent leader sounds like won't listen.
DeleteThe quilt I've stared is going to by smaller than I've done before and meant for me to used in my La-Z-Boy. I'm always color and I figure it will be functional. I had a t-shirt quilt made for my husband to use that way and he used it every day. I love hand piecing while watching TV. Gives me an excuse to sit and not feel like I'm wasting time.
Oh boy, now I gotta add Lost to my Winter Bingewatch List! Thanks for the review, Jean. Hope your finger heals quickly and well!
ReplyDeleteDeb
Anyone who loves character driven fiction will love the first two seasons. Then it starts adding some sci-fi in the 3rd season that still holds your interest but after that I was mainly watching out of misplaced loyalty to the characters.
DeleteThanks. I think I've typed too much today. Its' starting to swell, so I need to back off.
I love that you are rocking the craft world! You should make a list of what you want to have taken with you to the "other place." The pillow thing might not work! I love those little paper cutters. They're terrific.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you hand issue is under control, though keeping the arm above the heart for so long might get old. How do you do it at bedtime? They would have to strap it down if it was me! Sounds grim, but then most things do (and often are -- or not!). I have to say, you might have a few years on me but boy, do you tire me out! Now THAT is a schedule you're keeping. I don't think they'll ever send you to the "other place." That mind and body is like the Energizer Bunny!
I've thought bout making that list many times but I thought it turn into a self fulling prophecy. My mind gets plenty of exercise but not my body.
DeleteI actually sleep with my hand above my heart naturally, but I only have to do it while I'm awake and that's impossible to maintain. So I do the best I can.
I loved Lost. However, they lost me early in the series and most of the last 3 seasons I really had no idea what was going on but didn't really care, I strapped in for the ride until the end. The last episode, OMG I cried buckets of tears and loved the way they wrapped it up so we knew what happened to them all.
DeleteYes, and I was intrigued by the idea of living dual lives yet still have the same people in them.
DeleteI hope your hand heals fast.
ReplyDelete—-Cheerful Monk
Me too. It hurts now but I've over used my hand today.
DeleteBeing who I am, I love the craft session idea too, and think your cards are lovely. People can tell a handmade card and I think they appreciate the thought and effort. Your cyst doesn't surprise me because the human body is capable of soooo many interesting developments, most of which we are ignorant about until we age and talk to each other about what's happening. The cyst was particularly fascinating, and although not fun to recover, I'm glad there was a fix for it.
ReplyDeleteThe contrast between the GOP and Dem conventions is breathtaking. I'm crossing my fingers it portends a positive change in leadership, and maybe even a return to normalcy for the Republicans. Not sure how that can happen as long as Fox is out there promoting fear and hate, but we can always hope.
I think if enough down ballot Republicans who supported Trump loose javascript:;their seats or don't win one they are seeking it will be a great opportunity for the "normal" Republicans to take their party back.
DeleteI don't think it would be possible to not treat a cyst like that. I guess if they get big enough they pop and then get infected because they won't quit draining the joint fluid until the stem is removed. I guess mine was close to being that big.
I hope your finger is ok now, I like the homemade cards so much more personal, I don't watch telly much now days
ReplyDeleteI don't send many cards out anymore. Finger is still quite sore but it's only been two days.
DeleteYour mention of your cyst reminded me that I had one on the back of my hand in high school. I don't know what kind it was, but I do remember how I got rid of it. It wasn't intentional at all; I slammed my hand into a door jamb somehow, and the thing got smooshed. Clearly, yours was larger and more serious, but I remember how mine hurt, and you have all my sympathy.
ReplyDeleteI think you might enjoy NCIS. It's more detective story line than crime and punishment, although occasionally people do get their comeuppance. There are some great characters, including a Goth forensic scientist. It's the only tv series I ever got hooked by, and I enjoyed it so much I bought a few of the series.
Your card making sounds fun. I always loved making Valentine and Christmas cards when I was a kid, but I never continued on with it. Now I'm wondering if they still sell the paper doilies that went so well with red construction paper!
We were given a catalog of the paper products and ink stamps they sell of making cards and scrapbooks.. You would not believe all the stuff they have including those old fashioned doilies.
DeleteThe kind of cyst I had only happens on finger joints and I hope I never get another. Slamming your hand in a door jamb makes me shiver just thinking about it.
I'm in between shows to binge so maybe I'll give NCIS a try although I'm not big on crime and punishment themes.
My DH has had hand surgery, and I hope this is your only encounter with the hand surgeon. :-) Seems whatever happens with our finger joints is quite complex. Hope the healing is going well. Wiping with the other hand is super challenging.
ReplyDeleteI love that you are piecing together a quilt. I have a queen sized sampler quilt that I have carried around with me for 30+ years. It needs the edges bound and quilted and I keep swearing I will do it someday. But I do think a new quilting project would be more motivating.
I had trigger thumb surgery on both hands and carpal tunnel on both but this surgery was longer and more complicated, I was told. Don't want to repeat it.
DeleteIf you have your quilt ready to be quilted (back--filled layer--back piece basted together find a service that does it with a long arm machine. Contact a quilt shop for a name. I did that and a month later mine was finished and for a queen it only cost $100. The top is the creative part and it was too hard to motive myself for that non-creative step.
I hear you on the wiping issue, my stroke turned me into a leftie after a lifetime of being right-handed. I'm used to it now, but it was a long struggle, and it still never feels "natural", you know? What helps me immensely, though, is using baby wipes. Since they're "moist", they clean a lot better than dry paper, and Costco sells them unscented and hypoallergenic, and they work great for me. Your finger looks like it would be painful, I'm glad it's getting better.
ReplyDeleteMy husband's stroke turned him into a leftie as well. I had to get him one of those 6 inch tools that holds the paper. Funny how our arms seem like they are the same length but one natural reaches better than the other. I'd forgotten about the baby wipes. Thanks! Finger is still swollen but normal at this point in time.
DeleteI read blogs for fun and useful information and you never disappoint! Hope your finger is healing well, I'll store your experience in case I ever encounter one. Thanks also for enlightening me about the cutter. So cool! I already added one to my Amazon cart.
ReplyDeleteMy cutter came already and I've put it to use cutting score cards for Mahjong. Works great.
DeleteHealing Energies for your Hand Surgery Recovery. I never did get that lump on my Forehead resolved, but everything I Googled claimed it was nothing to worry about so, I'm at Peace with it now that it seems to have grown as big as it is going to get. The Body does some odd things over time that are nothing but an inconvenience or unsightly, so, I can live with that so long as it's nothing I should neglect. Yours sounded potentially damaging so I'm glad you got it resolved. I never got into "Lost" after just a few Episodes when it seemed to deteriorate to where I just couldn't enjoy it anymore. Always a pity when something Good then just goes Bad. *LOL* I like Creative Projects too and would like to take some Crafting Classes eventually when I have more Free Time and get things in Order and Done around here. I'm Hopeful that 2025 will be THE Year I finish all projects pending in the Art Studio and RV Garage Mahal, also clearing out what Allen moved to the back Porch/Patio area... which has languished there for lack of placement now. I have one of those mini guillotine Cutters, an Old One, and the full sized Old One you got rid of. Both are beautiful Wood, now most made are Plastic and rather spendy at the Craft Stores.
ReplyDeleteI, too, hope 2025 (or sooner) will be a good year for you. You've been thoroughly tested this year on all fronts.
DeleteNothing beats those old, full size wooden paper cutters. Don't get rid of yours as long as you still see crafting in your future. I can't wait until you set up your Art Studio. Please photo document the process so I can live vicariously through you.
I'm searching for another binge worthy show but it takes some time to find them. I have my go-to's in between or I catch up on movies.
